Mom's who BF and also supplement with formula....

I BF Juia for 11 months without any problems, it was much easier since she was my only child, with Todd I'm having trouble going out since he eat almost every 1.5 to 2 hours, he is a big eater being 18 lbs at almost 4 months. This is very demanding on me both physically and emotionally. I feel that I'm trapped in my house and I don't go out because I don't want to deal with it. But I want to be able to take the both of them out to places and be able to enjoy the day and not worry that he is going to want to eat the whole time that we are out. It gets very depressing just sitting at home and doing the same things day in day out.

I feel that if I start supplementing with formula he may going longer between feedings and allow me a little more freedom to go places.

Anyone that BF and supplement have any suggestions on how to start supplementing? How much do I start with in the bottle? TIA!

What about pumping?

I pumped, and it was a great help.... It is hard to find the time tho, and to keep yourself on schedule (At least I found it to be anyway).

If you want to go to formula directly. I would start him off at a 6oz bottle, and see what he finishes. He may finish all and want more or not finish it completely, but it'll be something for you to gauge how much he is drinking.

Re: Mom's who BF and also supplement with formula....

I BF and supplement, my DS just turned 3mths and weighs almost 13lbs. I started to supplement with one bottle of formula a day. Now becuase his demand is so high, I can't really keep up with him. So now he drinks (2 sometimes 3) 7oz bottles of Formula. and I the rest of the bottles are breast milk. To give them the formula in between give you a chance to get your milk up, and a chance to go out and know, " If he had a bottle of Breast milk before you leave you have about 2 hours before you need to feed him again and then you can give him a formula bottle while you are out. That should give you 3 hours before he needs to eat again. That's atleast 5 hours of "You" time that you have. It works for me and I know how that feels like you are trapped by your baby and the breast pump. To hold my DS I have just started putting some rice cereal in his bottle, at night so that he feels full longer and sleeps through the night. GOODLUCK !!Chat Icon

I can't pump enough, I would have to sit there for 3 hours to get a few ounces, I guess my boobs know the difference between the pump and my son--lol I never pumped with Julia either, plus I feel that would be more of a difficult situation for me anyway. I want to BF him, but add a bottle or 2 in a day to fill him up more, I think he feeds off me to much.

No advice except that you may decide to start solids a little bit on the early side and see how that goes. I'd still wait at least month but I guess I just wanted to remind you that solids are just around the corner.

If you are having issues with pumping then I say go for the form honey...

Kristina is 6 months old now, and she is right around the 18lb mark. She has an appointment in the beginning of September so I'll know her exact stats.

She drinks 6-7oz bottles for her bottle meals. I would say start off with the 6oz, and see how he does with that.

I actually started solds (oatmeal cereal) with him last week, but that didn't go so well, everything came up--lol So I figured it was just to early and would try again next month.

I never even tried pumping, I never was able to pump a lot with Julia and I found pumping to be a real PITA---lol so I never wanted to do it.

I guess i will try the 6oz bottles and see how he does, I'm so confused on how to start all of this, its all new to me....Chat Icon

Not much advice but wanted to say I give you a lot of credit. I always think about how BF will go with #2.
Honestly, if it'll improve your time with the kids and help you get through the day a bit easier I wouldn't hesitate to add a formula bottle - maybe start out with just 1 a day? Having one to bring it will surely make a difference in getting you out of the house Chat Icon

I had the medela but it was the smaller one (single pump) I feel if I pumped it would keep me on a schedule, I want to be able to feed him and go, I also feel my breast milk isn't filling him up, so hopefully starting off with one formula bottle will help....Chat Icon

I pumped and supplemented(at night). I found that the formula was heavier and kept her fuller all night long.

It is so hard to pump once you have the second. I tried many times and it was to demanding.
DD never took the bottle but I was able to go about 3 hours inbetween feedings and also fed her when we were out. I use to feed her at Nordstroms in the woman's lounge. She ate fast so it wasn't to bad. DS was usually ok.
The formula I would just try and introduce maybe one bottle a day and see what happens. Around the 3 month mark I also noticed I wasn't getting that full feeling and it was just my body adjusting to her needs. I never had a supply issue and EBF for 11 months.
I would try the cereal again maybe around 4.5 months. That is when my both took to it, early they didn't have any intrest.

When miki was born, I began supplementing her with formula as she was only latching onto one side when I BF....I would give her around 2-3 ounces per feeding in the beginning, she still ate every 2.5-3 hours (either bf or formula)....for a few months

With my DS I started supplementing with formula around 6 months and once I did my milk supply tanked. I guess because I wasn't pumping to make up for the feedings. By 8 months I had to stop BFing because I just didn't have enough milk. The formula feeding was easier and I only gave it when we were out, but I wish I would have been able to BF longer. My DD is 4.5 months and she hasn't had any formula yet. I really don't want to give it to her because I'm afraid it will effect my milk supply. With my DS I never BF in public, but now with the two of them if I didn't BF in public I would be like you and stuck in the house. I use a Hooter Hider and I LOOOOOVE it!! I BF everywhere and you can't see anything and don't have to worry about a blanket falling off or being pulled off. It's helped me keep my sanity!

When I had DD#2 I found it very hard as well to balance the constant BF and spending time with DD#1. Around the 3-4 month time I was tired of being trapped in the house. So when we went out I brought several of the ready to feed glass bottles (3 oz each) with us. If there was not a discreet place to BF while we were out then she got the formula bottle. Eventually I moved over to powered formula when we went out. However if she was getting formula I made sure to only be out for 1 feeding. I really didnt create a scheduale I just went with the flow of things. When we were home I BF. I would advise to try a bottle of formula at home to make sure he is ok with it and then just wing it when you go out if needed

Just wanted to add if all he has had is BM it may take a few tries to get him used to the taste of formula. You should try to mix formula and BM first to get him adjusted.

Re: Mom's who BF and also supplement with formula....

I started supplementing about 2 weeks ago. I started ONLY because I go back to work mid Sept. and wanted DS to be used to bottles all through the day.

Like you I get minimal when I pump. I have tried EVERYTHING and I only get about 10 ounces total pumping 3 times a day.

DS is 10 weeks old and at his appt. 2 weeks ago weighed 12.5 lbs.

I was advised by my ped he should be getting no more then 32 ounces a day.

This is what I have been doing:

The first 1 1/2 weeks I mixed in 2 ounces BM & 2 ounces of formula and gave him maybe 4 bottles a day through the day randomly, saving them mostly for being out. I would BF him in between if fussed and was hungry still. He took the formula AND the bottle FINE!!!

NOW, this week I am giving him bottles ONLY during the day. I give three 7 ounce bottles all 1/2 BM & 1/2 formula. A few times I have given an extra 4 ounces of formula if he seems hungry. On average he is taking these bottles about every 3 1/2 - 4 hours.

I am BF him first thing in the AM, after dinner time & then before bed. I pump in the AM, mid afternoon & evening when he goes to sleep. (figuring this will be what I do when I go back to work). I still only get about 10 ounces a day total. Whatever I pump I mix in the bottles I prepare for the next day.

ANYWAY......with all that what I am saying is if you want to supplement, try pumping SOMETHING to mix in......he may take it better!!

I know what you mean about worrying about when he will be hungry! When DS was younger and eating more often... I would pump as much as I could before I left the house and then keep the bottle handy. Sometime he would just snack in the stroller on it and it kept him content! This way I didnt have to worry about finding a place to bf and interrupting what I was doing!

At 4 months and 18lbs. I would definitely start with a 6oz. bottle and see how much he eats. You have to think about your supply as well so try to alternate the bottles and nursing. I did this for almost 5 months...going back to work was tough with nursing so I stopped.
