running and severe PMS

do any of your runners have severe PMS?

I do and it makes runnng impossible during those days.

the worst part is, it starts sometimes up to 5 DAYS before the start of my actual . so it really puts a dent in the schedule.

I get bad cramping starting a few days before and also some uh, stomach "issues" for lack of a better word...not to mention extreme soreness of the boobies (not fun when they are bouncing up and down for a half an hour)

I just feel badly b/c it's hard for me to get into the rhythm I want to be in...I ran Thursday and felt like ISH...I rode my bike 12 miles on Friday and felt even ISHIER...I haven't been able to do anything but walk since and I don't even have my period yet! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was just thinking that maybe one of you runners have a similar issue and have found ways to avoid it or work around it.

anyhow...thanks. Chat Icon

Re: running and severe PMS

I get severe cramping during my runs sometimes when I am PMSing. It gets so bad sometimes that I actually have to stop and sit for a few minutes and then I usually end up walking for the rest of my work out.
I have found now that I am running more, I haven't really been getting bad cramps. I sometimes take advil or midol before a run when I have PMS.

I'm sorry that it's sopainful for you - that must suck. maybe you have to get over that hump? power through it? I have always heard that the more you exercise the less your period effects you. I always associated that to why I have pretty easy ones.

I heard that, too. Ophelia, I have to say, the more water I drink before and during, the better I am.

Hey, you're bound to have crappy runs. Consider it better than sitting on the couch like a majority of people! Chat Icon

I was going to say the same thing as some of the other posters. I sometimes feel real crappy, especially the first 2 days but I power through it and in the end I feel SO much better.

As for the sore boobs, I have been dealing with this lately, due to my new coffee addiction Chat Icon All I can say is tape those suckers down. I have an amazing champion sports bra...looks like a bra and super supportive and then I put another regular looking sports bra over it...that seems to hold them down.

Feel better Chat Icon

Re: running and severe PMS

I get lots of the same symptoms you mentioned.

I force myself to go. Even if I don't do as well as I like. because it usually makes me feel better after my run. So, I just do a light job for a long as I can and don't really challenge myself. Basically, I just loosen up my muscles and take my mind off feeling like pacoopie.

yeah...powering through could leave me seriously damaged..not to mention uhh...soiled Chat Icon

the severity of my stomach issues during the first days prior to and OF my menstrual cycle are something I will refrain from describing..but thought maybe someone else experienced (though I don't wish it on anyone!)

pmpkn, I try to do the treadclimber and do walking...does the initial pain in your job subside after a bit???

maybe it's futile. Chat Icon

It does. I walk on the tread for about 8 minutes, then do a liight jog. not going to lie, i'm still in pain (and sometimes my belly isn't liking me very much and people around me suffer, if you know what I mean Chat Icon ) But I don't care. It helps. Believe it or not, having the incline higher helps too for some reason. So, even if you go slower the incline helps.

Also, have you tried soy milk during this time? It helps settle my stomach and sort of helps with the cramps. Also, I'm sure you already know this...NO COFFEE!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon It makes the cramps worse and the trip to the bathroom...well...even more unpleasant.
