Being a mommy is so hard
After daycare, I took Cailen to Stop n Shop. He saw me pick up strawberries, which he hasn't had in a while, and got so excited.... He jibber jabbered about them the whole time.
Was excited the whole car ride. I told him he would get some after dinner.
I made him dinner - pasta and green peas, and he refused to eat it.
He kept pointing to the fridge for the strawberries.
DH informed him that if he didn't eat dinner, he wasn't getting strawberries.
And sure enough, he didn't eat. And he cried when he saw me put the strawberries away
I know it's stupid, but I've been so sad about it all night.

That's tough. I'd go behind his back and give them to him anyway. Not like it's a lollipop! I'm a big sucker though!

I would have caved and given the strawberries... I figure I can be more strict when they can understand things better!

Re: Being a mommy is so hard
It is so hard but you are teaching him good habits. He can have some for breakfast.
He won't even remember in the morning. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Yeah, but DH already made the rule tonight, so its united front. If DH wasn't home, he would have gotten the strawberries, but I wouldn't have made the rule.
And trust me - the kid understands!!!!

Good for you and DH! Stick to your guns. I know you feel terrible. But I promise, he'll get over it way before you feel better.
I agree with the others. Give them to him with breakfast

Re: Being a mommy is so hard
I go through it about bananas. DS was constipated from 6 months to after 10 months and was a major prune diet, per pediatrician. Once he 'cleaned out' he finally got a taste of bananas and loves them!! Sad thing is, he wants them at every meal. He freaks out if he happens to see them and can't have them. But I can't suppository him again just so he can have his bananas.

I agree. DD still is a picky eater but I don't count fruit as a treat per se.

Re: Being a mommy is so hard
Probably not a popular opinion, but being a mommy IS hard, but I think you made this situation harder than it had to be. It was fruit, not ice cream or candy. I would've went over DH's head and given him the fruit. It's important that he eat, and fruit isn't a "junky" thing. I don't think at 17 months you can realistically rationalize with them and I think fruit is better than an empty belly at bedtime. Sometimes you have to pick your battles. Sorry

Re: Being a mommy is so hard
I probably would have given him the strawberries WITH his dinner and maybe he would haven eaten more of it.
Christopher LOVES peaches cut up and I will give him peaches with pretty much anything and he will eat it.
I agree with Summer that strawberries would be better than an empty belly

Re: Being a mommy is so hard
I don't see fruits as junk or snacks. I would have tried to incorporate with his dinner.
But yes I understand. I have to stop DS with the puffs when it's too much. So it's whining but that's OK.

Being a mommy isn't hard... but being a GOOD mommy is SUPER tough sometimes.
But worth it.

Awww give the mommy a break, she was just trying to show respect towards her husband's decision. Being a united front is so important too! Its so hard balancing everyones needs!!!
