I have a child who is MR ..and his behavior is soo hard to deal with.
I teach in NYC, in a public school that is not D-75. Apparently, I have learned that the BOE is trying to get rid of D-75. So, I am wondering what to do with one of my students. He is mildly mentally retarded. His family conditions are extremely hard. His mother has no control. I have tried rewards, immediate reinforcements, trips to the principal, charts, walks, playdough,....nothing is working!!! All he does in my room is sit and clap/self stim. Any suggestions? I am at my not giving up!

are you a gen. ed. teacher or a special ed. teacher?
an MR student should NOT be in a gen. ed. room without major support.
if you can give me some more info, maybe i can help? i teach special ed.

ITA , does he have a 1:1 ? What related services is he getting, hopefully you can collaborate with his therapists.

I am the special ed teacher in a self contained classroom. However, he is so MR and violent... it is scary. My sped. coordinator has nothing but "let him play". He just claps all day and pretends he is a bus. He can read/write but.. I just want to know how to curb his behavior. He has all services except counseling ...I am working on it!

I haven't had any experience with children who have MR but I have done a few things with my kids who have other problems (I am in a high school setting)...I have sat them down and made them aware of what they are doing...some did not know/realize what they are doing...also, I worked with the guidance office as well as the parents to figure out what cues the child would need to act "normal" ... again I never had to deal with any form of MR...I hope you are able to work things out with this student.

Apparently not,...I tried. The parents are afraid of how he will look in the community. Also, NYC District 75 which would be similar to LI's BOCES schools are being phased out. Which means...I will be getting more of these students in my classroOOM in the coming years. Any suggestions?

I work for D75 and we're not being phased out. There are so many of these children who cannot function in a gen ed or self contained classroom that there is no way to get rid of it. I would call the parents and request a CSE for change of placement. Perhaps he could be moved into a smaller class setting. If you show documentation that you have tried A, B & C to adapt behavior, they will have to listen. Did you do an ABC chart or an FBA? Do you have a BIP on his IEP? I teach kids with autism, but have done some work with MR kids also. FM me if you want.

An ABC chart attempts to determine what causes the child's maladaptive behavior. A is the antecedent (what happens right before the behavior occurs), B is the behavior (what does the child do), C is the consequence (what is the result of the behavior, ie. punishment, etc.) This will help you to find out what is causing the behavior so you can either avoid this cause or desensitize the child to it.
An FBA is a Functional Behavior Assessment. It's essentially the same thing, but more involved than an ABC. It determines the function of the behavior. FM me. I teach children with autism so we're doing this all the time.

I teach in NC so things are a little different...I would def do a FBA on him and possibly a BIP or a Behavior Intervention Plan.
Also, why would the parents be concerned about the community? I mean the kid isn't going to have a big sticker on his head that says "I have an Intellectual Disabiltiy." If he can recieve the proper services in a classroom or placement geared for ID, then that is where he belongs. Perhaps the IEP team needs to sit down and discuss what would be best.
