HSG Question - do they knock you out?

I am having my HSG on Monday...and have a couple of questions.

Do they knock you out totally (with anesthesia)? Or is it a local?

Can I drive myself home?

How long does it take?

How many Advil should I take before hand (I cant eat/drink anything 2 hrs before the test).

How uncomforatble were you and how long did it last?

What happens when they are done? Is there some discharge or colored pee or something?

I'm starting to get anxious!

Re: HSG Question - do they knock you out?

The only put a lotion to numb your cervix...you are completly awake and in control the whole time.

Yes you can drive yourself home

once the catheter is in, the proceedure takes about 10-20 minutes. For me, the only discomfort was putting the catheter in, then I was fine.

You should take 2 advil before you go

When they are done, they will give you a pd because some of the iodine will come out. I also spotted, very lightly, for about a day

Honestly, for me, the hardest part was leading up to it.

I have heard different things. They don't knock you out that's for sure, and you can drive yourself home. I do think that it has a lot to do with you pain threshold. My SIL had it done and said it was very uncomfortable but not painful and a friend had it done and said it was horrible. I would take a couple of advil and see what happens. Good luck...and how did your blood test go?

Kathy, I agree that the hardest part of the HSG was the whole day leading up to it! I was completely on edge, I even FORGOT to take the Advil beforehand because I was so nervous and distracted.

In the end, it was nothing. A little cramp when they put the catheter in. Other that that, the only discomfort was the normal discomfort of the speculum, etc.

I brought DH w/ me but I ended up being fine and could have easily gone home myself.

GOOD LUCK!

Re: HSG Question - do they knock you out?

Thanks girls.
I'm starting to get a little nervous! I've been reading about it online but I think I'm in information overload and dont want to read about the specifics anymore...ugh.

My blood (2 viles) was taken yesterday and my doctor is OUT until Thursday! So I wont know anything until Friday probably (Not happy about that...)

Have my HCG on June 6th
Annual exam on June 14th
More blood work 7 dpo

That's it, for now.

I drove myself home, the didn't do anything to eliminate the pain. The advil didn't work on the pain either.

Re: HSG Question - do they knock you out?

My Re recommended...2 advil , 2 hours prior to the exam, and 2 advil, 1 hour prior. I took, three advil both times. I don't think anyone numbed my cervix....they inserted the catheter......and then the dye.....when the dye was inserted...I felt "pressure" exactly like Af cramps.....the test.....lasted literally about 4 minutes. So I had AF cramping for about 4 minutes. After...they released the catheter....the pressure disappeared, and I had no more discomfort. Noone, gave me a pad,...but luckily I brought my own. I would have been able to drive myself home...but dh, came with me. We went to the cheesecake factory right after. lol Food always makes me feel better. Where are you getting your HSG done ?

Re: HSG Question - do they knock you out?

They said dont eat/drink anything 2 hrs prior to the HSG - so I will take 3 advil 2 hrs prior.
Dr Walker in plainview, dont know him but my Dr. referred me to him.

Re: HSG Question - do they knock you out?

Noone, told me not to eat or drink.....I just had to pee...before the exam. How can you take painkillers if you can't drink ? Just.....drink a bit of water....to take the advil one hour before as well. I had a paper straight from my RE that had those instructions.....a little bit of water,...will not affect your test. I still don't understand...why they are putting all those restrictions on you.

Re: HSG Question - do they knock you out?

Sometimes if you think the worst you will be pleasantly surprised, so since I KNOW NONE OF OUR ADVICE about the pain is going to convince you not to wrry, I do think you probably be uncomfortable and then surprised..fingers crossed for ya anyway.

I know I had a TON of colposcopys and some people feel they are painful and it never bothered me more then I couldnt handle by calming down ...they do numb the cervix the same way for that as for the HSG ...the iodine tends to show up for a few hours later, thats just to help them see ( it turns the cervix a certain color) and plus it helps ward off any infection.

YOU WILL BE FINE!!
