Re: No winter coats in carseats: video

I take this with a grain of salt considering the information is coming from a company trying to sell its products.

but you know what, it makes total sense. I am not willing to take any chances. I am not buying anything but I will make sure to put the straps UNDER the coat, and not over it. Chat Icon

I was thinking this also.

I am also a little confused. I will have to watch it again. Is the video saying that if you leave the straps as loose as they have to be to strap in your child with the coat on, even when the coat is off, then it is unsafe? In other words, if your child is not wearing a coat, tighten the straps and you should be fine??? Or, is it implying that in an accident the loosened straps (to fit around the jacket) will never be tight enough to secure child?

Regardless.... I do like the idea of strapping in DS and then zipping him up.

Thanks for the video! It's making us really THINK about something we do each day.Chat Icon

I can't see youtube and curiosity is killing me...

What did the advertisement show that makes the jacket so dangerous? What could happen and how is the jacket involved?

what i wonder is at what speed one has to travel for clothes to "compress". i never have interfered with the straps while my DD was an infant, but now as a toddler i have put her in bulkier jackets here and there, just not for long trips. i have to find another alternative...

It was showing that in a collision, the jacket could compress, and the baby could fall out of the car seat or be ejected. Chat Icon

I tend to agree. I can see the point that is trying to be made, but it is an advertisement.

Well, what about coming from an FDNY EMT who is certified to install carseats and had to take a course in it?

I *always* post on threads like this that my DH is a huge advocate of not putting them in a jacket in the carseat b/c then the straps aren't tight enough against the body, they are tight against the coat. And if there is a collision then DC can be ejected. He has seen it happenChat Icon Chat Icon

I understand taking THIS video with a grain of salt, and not wanting to buy their products, but this is a real thing.

Thank you for posting your information! I'll believe your DH before this company any day.

Frankly, I never thought about this. I just loosened his straps this morning to fit him in the car. But now I'll try fitting the jacket over his straps, or laying it over the seat as another poster suggested.

Thank you for sharing. I like the the idea of undoing the zipper before you buckle them. This way, they still have their coat on. Otherwise, given the walk from my house to the driveway it would seem pointless to even put them in the coat in the first place.

Thanks for sharing. I was actually thinking about this yesterday as I was strapping the kids in. I think from now on I will start the car early. Take them out in their coats and have them take the coats off, once they are in the warm car.

Isn't this pretty much the same idea as a Bundle Me? The back of the jacket is still between the straps and the baby.

Yes....that's true. But on THIS PAGE where it has the steps to check - it says "If you can fit more than two fingers under the harness at the child's shoulder bone, the coat is too thick and is not safe for use with the car seat."

And although it the article then continues to say not to have anything behind their back IMO if you do the "test" with having the coat on but the straps under the front of the coat the weight of DC compressing the back of the coat might make it "acceptable"

Thanks for this Kate....

I was just thinking to myself.. Hey, why havent we heard anything like this EVER before????

I mean if this happens, how come carseats dont have warning, and things like that...

DS hates the coat in the carseat- so TBH Im tired of fighting, and now that I know it can be dangerous, its a battle he'll win.

Im curious what do you do though...???
I mean strapping the coast in the car thing isnt going to work for me...

If you leave the coat unzipped and open in the front does it make a difference???

We did the bundle me when she was an infant but are you still supposed to be not using jackets even as toddlers and older? b/c now at 2 1/2 we've been using a jacket.

Thanks for this! It definitely makes it clearer than the original video. I couldn't help but laugh at the baby crying during the demonstration. Chat Icon

For those that "doubt" the video because of the apparent advertisement, if you read up on this, it's rather well-established that puffy winter coats are not safe in a carseat. I just posted the video so you can see WHY. I don't really see how it's debatable.

I have been obsessed with this all night...

How did we never know this????

I did find this, for anyone interested...

"To check to see if a coat or a bunting is too thick, put the child in the seat wearing the coat or snowsuit. Adjust the harnesses to fit. Remove the child from the car seat and then remove the coat. Put the child back into the car seat and if the harness is loose -- more than two fingers can fit under it -- then the coat or snowsuit is too thick to be worn in the car seat."

Re: No winter coats in carseats: video

I actually have the car seat poncho and it works great. I bought it because I was looking for an alternative since its well established that bulky coats are not safe in carseats. I've posted this site before but there is a lot of information available about the risks of ejection from the seat as well as other helpful info. car safety
My older one is 2 1/2. Last year I would put a thin fleece one piece on her and the poncho. Its fine for door to driveway or other short distances. I would always bring her coat though in case we were going to be outside walking more. This year, she's not so crazy for the poncho so a lot of the time I just take off her coat in the car. She actually does it herself. She knows that she's not supposed to wear it. My 9 month old has a cover that goes over the car seat like a shower cap. I have this one-nuzzler -but there are lots of them. The Bundle Me is not actually tested with car seats so may not be safe. Not saying it isn't, just that you don't know. I don't trust anything that goes between the baby and the seat. From what I understand, it would also void your warranty with your carseat manufacturer if anything were to happen. Read your manual-most if not all say that aftermarket items that did not come with the seat should not be used and therefore release them from liability. The nuzzler does not go near the harness at all so it doesn't count. Just something to consider.
I'm admittedly little obsessed with car cafety. I have been in the ER after motor vehicle accidents and have seen children killed so its a very sensitive issue for me.

Well it might be an advertisement but most of it is actually well documented. Chris the seat inspector that many of us know in Garden City/Mineola lectured at a mingling moms lunch I went to and he discussed in full what happens when you use coats in car seats. He also said that the bundle me is not designed to go with the seat and voids the warrenty of the seat if anything were to happen. That anything that goes into the seat behind the child is also a safety issue - so I don't think the coat around the child is a better option.

He recommended dressing them warmly and leaving some warm blankets in the car (or wrapping them in the blankets to get to the car then covering them with the blanket in the car - and putting their jackets on when you take them out of the car to go somewhere. So I guess the poncho idea sounds good if your child kicks off the blankets.
