Question for those following the Hal Higdon training guides

What do you do on the "strengthen and stretch" days?

Just curious....

Also - there are more than 15 weeks until the marathon, I think - and I'm following the 12 week novice guide for the half marathon - DH said I should do the 1st week for several weeks to get a good base goping, and to prolong the schedule - I thought that was a good idea... Anyone else doing this?

I still haven't decided if I am going to do it. But, what DH says sounds good. If I get my butt in gear and decide soon that is what I will do.

Anyway - on your strengthen and stretch days, I would do weight training or pilates or something like that.

Every monday is strangthen and stretch - I did upper body and some squats yesterday - I would like to do yoga, but honestly, some nights I don't have time for any of that - I can't believe I am taking this on with a full time job, a toddler, and nights where DH has to get his daughters, leaving me with 30 minutes for a workout!!!

Tonight I have a meeting until 7:30 in Massapequa, THEN driving to Northport to do my 3 mile run tonight at the gym.... Chat Icon

i think strengthen means strength training, weight machines, pilates, free weights etc, and stretching.

I followed his 10K plan when I did Cow Harbor and what your DH says sounds like a good idea. On the stretch and strengthen days, I would either do pilates as recommended by other posters or I would work out with hand weights and resistance bands. Chat Icon

Re: Question for those following the Hal Higdon training guides

Thanks ladies -

Sorry, I should clarify a little - I was looking for ideas for those days - so, if you do strength training, what are your workouts - what upper body, lower body, sets, etc do you do.....

Pilates is a good idea - I think my gym does mixed weight and yoga classes....

For upper body, I used free weights and followed some exercise cards I found in Self or Fitness magazine. I think if you go to their websites, you can find some ideas for weight and amount of reps. I would also do some of the upper body work while sitting on a fitness ball to help keep my core stabilized.

For lower body, I did mostly lunges, squats, and bike riding.

I did these on days where I didn't run or do pilates and yoga.

Strength training- squats, lunges, leg raises, I use the machines that work the quads and the hips (abduction?)

Arms- pretty much the machines, maybe weights if I'm feeling daring Chat Icon

If I start early, I actually double up weeks until I catch up...so weeks 1&2 at week 1; weeks 3&4 at week 2; and weeks 5&6 at week 3...then continue on.

I'm a slacker on stregthening...so I usually do junk miles
