IUI's

How many of you have had an IUI and what was the process like. DH and I are going to have to do it this month. Dr. put me on Clomid today (CD3) and I have to go back next thursday for sono and blood test and I am not sure exactly where we go from there.
Just curious how others felt about the process and how it went.

Re: IUI's

I had my first one done last month, with Clomid.

I did my Clomid days 3-7, then on day 12 I went in for a sonogram. There were 2 or 3 follicles at the right size, so they gave me the hcg trigger shot and I scheduled the IUI for the next day.

DH had to have an appointment 90 min before me, to leave his "sample" Chat Icon Then they wash the sperm, etc. When I came for my appt, they just used a catheter to do the IUI-- it was really painless. You lay there about 15 min afterward, and then you're done.

My IUI was not successful, in fact I had a problem from the Clomid and won't be taking it anymore. I'm taking a TTC break this month, but as long as I get the "ok" to proceed with injectibles, I'll be doing more IUIs in the future.

FM me if you want any more info.

It's actually very simple. After the doctor feels your eggs are "ready" you are given a trigger shot, (I got HCG). The next moring you show up with DH. He provides his sample, which is then washed and evaluated. After about 30-45 minutes of sperm prep, they insert a small catheter containing the sperm up into your uterus. You continue to lay on your back for about 10 minutes, get dressed and it's over. Some doctors give you the option of coming back the next morning for an extra dose, or you are instructed to have intercourse that night and the following day. Good Luck!

Re: IUI's

Im going through my 4th one. I had done 3 IUI's with Letrizole, and now this month Im doing one with injectables. It is not that bad at all. I usually do 2 in a row, so I hope this is the month.
You have to go in and do blood and sono's around ovulation time, which is why they do the sono's to monitor your eggs, and see if they are growing.
When you are ready, they will give you a trigger shot, and you come in the next day for your IUI.

Re: IUI's

Kinda personal question- Can anyone tell me why their Dr referred them to have IUI...what problems were you having?

My Dr suggested it may be a possibility for me due to having cervical cancer and possibly scar tissue developing due to my surgery to remove it.

Re: IUI's

I just had my first one this month....I went for 3 ultrasounds....and the Dr. said that the follicles weren't ready. He gave me a blood test on my 3 ultrasound (day 14) because he said that with the chlomid (50 MG from day 4-9), he thought he would see different results (meaning having the follicles at the right size). The blood test came back to show that I was ovulating....so I never took my trigger shot. DH and I had to go the very next morning (that was Sunday)....so now we are in the 2WW.

My SIL had success on her 3rd IUI.

Re: IUI's

I guess I didn't have a serious medical problem for me to get IUI's...it is just easier for the spermies to get past your cervix by doing an IUI..(they won't have that long swim to get past the cervix)

Re: IUI's

A lot of REs go straight to clomid/IUI......

There are many reasons...one being that it does avoid any type of cervical mucus or ph problem. Your Dh's sperm....and your CM don't always work well together.

Another reason, is that clomid can assist ovulation and make it 'stronger" , however, clomid also 'dries" up CM...therefore, many times...it can be useless when done without IUI. In other words, you can have a strong ovulation but no cervical mucus.

Another reason and the one to be aware of ...is that Re's or 'doctors' make money off IUI's and it doesn't require much of their time. All the u/s sounds...and bloodwork.....add up in dollar signs and if you have great insurance....they seem to push IUI even more. I personally have great insurance, that allows for "unlimited" IUIs. A lot of Re's rush into IUI.....and the patients...say "oh wow, they are really trying to help"...when in essence they haven't even been that thorough. A friend from work's daughter had three IUIs done......all unsuccessful. She found a new doctor, and he had her have a laposcopic surgery. Well...lo and behold...she had endometriosis . She had no symptoms...except...some discomfort during AF and lower back pain. The new RE removed the endo....and now she is on to her fourth IUI. The new RE said "it would never have happened"......After hearing this story, I had to take a step back and do some research. This girl and I, both were going to the same RE. I was scheduled for clomid/iui this cycle. I decided, that I needed to take some time and 'wait". I will attempt IUI this summer.....with my current RE...but if it fails..I am moving on to a new RE...and possibly Lap surgery...(even though, i never in my life have had any surgery....)

Re: IUI's

I know, for me, that I was on Clomid (100mg) for four months and no BFP...so Dr. referred me to the RE who said that I most likely have PCOS and also had a conal for cervical cancer a few years ago so there may be some scar tissue. He said the same stuff about Clomid and CM and also that I may have unfriendly CM (meaning it kills DH's sperm) so he is going straight to IUI.
It's probably true though about the $$$$. I have never seen anything like the amount of testing they do and how many times we have to go back

Same here. The IUI just put the sperm in the uterus, so they didn't have to work so hard to swim to the egg.

Its Mrs. Stupid again but what an ICU?

Not a stupid question at ALL, we are all learning here

Here is a definiton I just looked up:

IUI (intrauterine insemination fertility treatment)

In an IUI procedure, the practitioner inserts specially treated sperm through the cervix into the woman's uterus. IUI increases the likelihood of fertilization. This procedure is performed around the time of ovulation. In some cases, particularly if low sperm count is a concern, two IUI procedures can be performed several hours apart.

IUI may use the partner's sperm, or if indicated, sperm from a donor

Here is another good link:
IUI Definition

Also as some of the ladies said above, a "trigger shots" is administered (HCG trigger shot ) when the follicles look ready .. this is given before the IUI procedure is done, because the IUI needs to be performed as close to ovulation as possible .. (please read some of the posts above, since honestly I dont want to give the wrong information as I am not TOO knowlegeable in this subject.)

Often ladies have an IUI done while they are on Clomid as well

HTH!
