I know I am getting old but please dont tell me i am the only one that got the book "Are you there God its me margaret?" Anyone???
Get the 2006 edition when I read it they were still using belted sanatary napkins!!!
Are you there God its me Margaret
Nope... not the only one! I remember my mother coming home from the library with it for me.
Too funny!!! I got mine from my older sister.. Before I even got my period!!
I'm the oldest so I was the first to have to have that "talk" I also remember my mother explaining to me how to use a pad, since at that time the one's with the belts weren't really around much any more.

Re: anyone with preteen girls in their lives, question
I loved Are you There God....
I wasn't mortified to tell my mom, but I was 14 and felt like the last person in the world (the world being my 8th grade class) to get it
No gift, but I remember my mom hugged me and said she was proud of me

i would've been mortified if someone gave me a gift! i remember my aunt saying something to me about 'finally being a woman' and i wanted to crawl into a hole.
i think when you're older you can deal with it a little better
however, its really sweet of you to think of her like that!
ITA!!!!

Re: anyone with preteen girls in their lives, question
I agree with privacy and some girls being mortified, but there have to be 1 or 2 adults that the child can confide in, if we all "ignore it" what does that tell them ?? to be ashamed, to act like it didnt happen ?
she was very happy with the gifts I gave her and kept whispering to me about it, Im one of her "confidants" about it all, I think the "mortified" factor depends on who and the relationship with the child.
thanks again for a funny thread that this turned into, the slap story was great.

ugh, my dad said something similiar and I had a similiar reaction
My dad did too and I was mortified!!! My mother then gave me a book to read about what was happening to me and that was the end of any discussion.

I had that book!
"I must, I must, I must increase my bust."
Me too!! I was reading it when I was still pretty young. WHen she kept talking about getting her period, I thought she was trying to get into a class (you know- first period, second period).
Halfway through the book I asked my mom what a "period" was. She told me.
