Massive ear infections!! (UPDATE a few posts below)

I need advice. Last Tuesday I went to the dr and they said I was beginning two ear infections (which I haven't had in at least 10 years!) and was put on an antibiotic, Levaquin. I got progressively worse and was back on Friday. They put me on Keflex.

I am still in so much pain and am having problems hearing now. I am supposed to be flying for my niece's wedding on Friday. Am I supposed to be feeling better by now or am I impatient? I haven't had an ear infection in YEARS, so I don't remember how long it takes.

Could I possibly be told I can't fly?!?!?!

TIA!!!!

Re: Massive ear infections!!

The infection may of cleared up but you may still have fluid causing pressure - that can be very painful. I would take a decongestant tonight to try and drain the fluid and go back to the Dr. for a follow up.

Re: Massive ear infections!!

So, you started the Keflex on Friday? I think it could take 3-4 days to work but there's nothing wrong with calling the doctor now because of your concern about travelling!

Not flying could be a possibility. I would definitely call your doctor tomorrow. I hope you feel better! Chat Icon

Re: Massive ear infections!!

I get lots of them, but usually the antibiotic starts to work about halfway through, day 5 of 10 or so.

Did you see an ENT or a primary doctor? I've found primary doctors don't always diagnose them correctly and may not give you the right drug, not sure if it's because they don't have the right equipment. The ENT usually cleans my ear out too, which usually helps pretty quickly.

If you are still in pain though, I would call.

I did see my primary. Getting into an ENT is impossible on short notice. I'm trying to get back into my dr, but the phone has been busy all morning. Guess the snowday yesterday will make their office impossible to get in. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Massive ear infections!!

UPDATE. Back from the dr.

Well, it seems I have ear infections caused by some sort of virus. No antibiotics will help. Both my ears are bad. He said it's okay to fly and it's okay for my ears to pop. He put me on some strong decongestant and told me to make sure I took it about 1-2 hours before getting on the plane.

Now the question is: Who will cry more on the plane? Me or DS? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks ladies! Chat Icon
