Endoscopy Procedure UPDATED 3/26

I am so scared. I have never been put to sleep before. They are checking my upper gi tract because I have been so sick and may have damaged my esophigous and stomach. They say u dont feel a thing, and ur in and out in 20 minutes or so... Has anyone done this? is it scary? I am quite terrified about the entire thing...

UPDATED 3/26:

I am home!!! The endoscopy wasnt so bad.. it was actually the best sleep i ever ever had!!! THE WORST PART WAS THE WAITING AND THE NOT EATING!! oh and the nerves leading up to it all... So it seems that my esophagus is ok--I just need to take some acid medicine for a month and see how that goes BUT it seems that there may be some bacteria in my stomach that is treatable but I hafta call tomorrow to find out exactly what it is..

my stomach sonogram came back good too...tomorrow i will also get the results of the blood test and the thyroid test, i m really hoping everything is ok with that too..

they also told me to "stop being so nervous" hahaha if they only knew! now i m going to go rest because i m sooo sleepy but ty for thinking of me everyone and for all the calming posts, it really means so much to me!!!!

Re: Endoscopy Procedure tomorrow at Gastro Dr.

I had one completely awake (b/c i don't like the idea of being put out) and it was fine - just VERY weird so I do NOT suggest going that route! But, anyway, I was fine completely awake so I am sure you will be fine too! Good luck Chat Icon

I have been under anesthesia many, many times....

You will feel drowsy and then the next thing you know you are waking up...

had one, and wasn't completely put under- more of a twilight- it was fine and I wasn't out for that long at all- maybe 20 minutes.. just go right home and be couch bound and you'll be fine.

good luck- hope there isn't any major damage!

That's exactly how I felt as well! It was actually pretty awesome! I especially enjoyed the moment when you are going under--everything starts spinning and going cloudy at the same time!

I had it done few years ago, I do remember waking up a bit when they were doing the procedure but then falling asleep few seconds later... it really went fast, just a little sleepy for few hours afterwards... good luck Chat Icon

Re: Endoscopy Procedure tomorrow at Gastro Dr.

Keep in mind it's not general anesthesia like for surgery.
It's just IV sedation- like if you were getting a wisdom tooth out.
You won't remember anything and it will just feel like sleep...

Re: Endoscopy Procedure tomorrow at Gastro Dr.

Good luck! I am scheduled for an endoscopy, myself. I have only been under once before but I'm quite scared again. I have to remind myself that back then, I did come out wondering what I had been so afraid of! Most people feel that way afterwards!!!

Re: Endoscopy Procedure tomorrow at Gastro Dr.

hey michelle.
i work for a gi practice. the endoscopies don't even take 20 minutes, probably about 10 to 15 minutes. you will be fine, it will be over so fast that you will be amazed. you will not feel a thing or know a thing that is happening since you will be sleeping. but don't worry, the sedation they give you is not as strong as the one they use for actual surgeries. hope your tummy comes back normal

FM me the name of the doc if you can, maybe jit's noe of my guys, lol Chat Icon
