are there any people in your company like this?
is there anyone at your job where it seems the rules just don't apply and it doesn't seem to matter? or someone who can do whatever they want and people just look the other way?
there is one girl in my office who never follows the rules on one particular issue and it gets addressed, then she does it again, and that seems to be okay. she yells at her boss (a VP). That seems to be okay. There were some problems between her and the other person in her department in the first position, the one she was hired for when she got to my company so they stuck her in a new position. is there something wrong with this picture??? one of my work friends has a huge problem with all of this and keeps raising the issue, i keep telling her to let it be, that things obviously aren't going to change, that this girl has a hold on the company somehow and my work friend is the one who will ultimately get hurt. am i nuts?

Yes, in my firm, they are known as partners.
Seriously, though, that person acts that way because there are clearly no real consequences for her behavior. If she worked in my office, she'd have been fired by now. Unfortunately, if the higher ups won't reprimand the behavior, it will continue... Not much you can do unless you are one of her superiors unfortunately.

I have someone in my office who works only PT and she gets whatever she wants! She takes more days off (unpaid but still) than anyone else! She can change the hours she works and it gets approved! She just does whatever and it's always fine. I cannot STAND her - and not for those reasons, either, she's a VERY annoying individual! I don't know how her hubby deals with her

I know there are several employees in my company like this. I think it's because they are related to the VPs. Fortunately, I don't ever have to deal with them at all, but some of my friends in other departments rant about them all the time.

I think you're spot on. Obviously the rules don't apply to this person for SOME reason and honestly, to fight that could put your friend in a bad position.
They could be labeled a "trouble maker" even though they're right and while they may not loose their job, life there could become miserable.
Trust me, you're NOT wrong, and you should try to convince your friend to keep their mouth shut.
I, unfortunately am learning this lesson the hard way.

I DID learn the hard way so this is sounding all too familiar to me and i'm a little scared for my friend. I got ousted from my company because of it. i'm sorry to hear you're learning this lesson too.
At least at my old job, i knew what the 'hold' was. the person (it was my boss), had the whole relationship stem from her sleeping with a company vp repeatedly. in th is case, the girl who the rules don't apply to reports to a gay man, so this is obviously not the case!

Hmmm...that's an interesting twist. Well, maybe this person is a "family friend" of a higher up at your job since we know she's not sleeping with the boss!
I'm sorry you had to learn the lesson...I'm paying the price at my current job and it sucks beyond belief!
I've been a good employee, done my work (and do it well) but because I've called some people out on not doing their job (b/c they accused ME of not doing mine) I bare the brunt.
It sucks but as I said in another post, I'm just happy to have a job.
