eating/drinking before D&C?

So i went to get my pre-surgical testing today. They told me i can't eat OR drink anything past 12AM the night before the procedure....which i figured, ok...fine, i thought the procedure would be in the AM.

Well, after i left the office i got a message on my phone that it would be at 2:30PM! I can't imagine not eating or drinking anything all day before the procedure! What did everyone elses doctors say? Were you allowed to eat or drink? Do you think i should call the office to confirm that?

Also, they said to have a light dinner at 7PM....but it's EASTER...i wasn't planning on just a LIGHT dinner. Do you think it is cool if i have a little more than a LIGHT dinner? of course i am not planning on pigging out either, lol

Re: eating/drinking before D&C?

You can't eat or drink because of the anesthesia. My D&C was scheduled for 12:00 noon and I had to be there at 11:30 AM. I couldn't eat or drink anything after midnight. I made sure that I did not have anything salty the night before and I drank LOTS of water before midnight. It's definitely rough, but you can do it!

How long does it take the anasthesia to wear off? I don't even know if they are doing local or general anesthesia for the procedure, i didnt' think to ask! Ugh.....i just can't wait to get this OVER with!!! I guess my plan is... I am just going to try to stay up really late the night before the procedure and sleep REAL late that day (if i can, i'm used to waking up so early so we will see)....this way, i can wake up...shower, and then leave my house for the D&C. Not eating won't seem so bad then!

How long it wears off depends on what kind of anestesia they give you. I had a D&C twice and was put under both times. The second time they gave me a diferent type and it was much easier on my stomach. I threw up the first time.

It stinks that you aren't going in until 2:30! My first one I didn't end up going in until 5:30 and hadn't eaten. I was there at 8 am. I think sleeping in will definitely make you more comfortable.

It wore off pretty quickly for me. After they woke me up, I left the doctor's office within the hour.

DON'T DO IT! Do NOT eat or drink....starve yourself.

I had the same scenario and all I did was chew gum, and when I got there they asked me, "Did you eat or drink? " and I said NO but my DH told them I had gum, and they told me that I could not have it done.....when you get anastesia, you risk DEATH if you have any acid in your stomach, which is created bye eating/drinking/chewing.

I absolutely could NOT wait any longer.....my anxiety level was so high....so I had the choice of either waiting, OR doing it awake. I did it awake.

DO NOT EAT/DRINK/CHEW unless you want to be awake, which I do not recommend.

After the procedure, they will give you juice and some crackers....and then you can eat whatever you want. But beforehand....NOTHING.

I had the same thing as the above poster, I had to be rushed down to have a D&C following my late miscarriage, and the doctors told me that because I had eaten a cookie and had a cup of tea at 10 am, I had to wait until 4 pm to have the anestesthic...it was awful waiting. DO NOT EAT, make your life easier and safer.

I had mine scheduled for 2:30pm and they told me that I couldn't eat past midnight. I had to be at the hospital at 11:30am. Me and DH went to the diner the night before and ate at 10:30 so I wouldn't wake up starving. Surprisingly, your body cooperates and eating and drinking is the last thing you are thinking about. Good luck and God bless..

I think you're safe to have your Easter dinner b/c your procedure is so late tomorrow. Just make sure you have nothing after midnight like they say so that your stomach is empty by 2:30.

Good luck.

The procedure itself really isn't bad. The physical pain doesn't even compare to the emotional pain.

Re: eating/drinking before D&C?

DOnt So it. Anesthesia is very risky when you even have a SIP of water. Its b/c its a light anesthesia..like a twillight...

When I went to have mine, I had drank a glass of water and they wanted to intubate me to put me under. That freaked me out b/c I didnt want tubes down my throat for a 5-10 min procedure. I ended up doing my D & C awake b/c I wa sin the hospital and the OR was booked for us.

ANyway, just deal the best you can, you can eat lots after. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
