Updated...NEED HELP!!!DS is painfully constipated (TMI)
and I dont know how to help him. The dr said this would happen from the anesthesia and drugs from yesterday. I've tried having him drink water, juice, sticking a thermometer in his butt w/vaseline (and that was horrible b/c he is already sore down there). I can't put him in the tub b/c he can't get his winky wet. He has been trying to poop for almost 4 hours and every 1/2 hour he gives it a push and he turns bright red and cries I could try a suppository but there is no way he would even let me push it in or keep it in.
Any advice or ideas?
UPDATE
I put in a suppository around 8:00. He cried for about 15 min trying to push something out and there was NOTHING. The only thing he pushed out was what was left of the suppository. I dont know what to do. I am so upset. He is sleeping now. Do you think I should call the dr. now or just wait until the morning? The label on the suppositories says if they dont work to call the dr. I know he doesnt have anything wrong...he is just constipated from the anesthesia and meds. I think whatever he has in thereis so big he can't get it out

Pears, Peaches, Apricots, Prunes...either in juice, puree or whole form. I would try the suppository - it can't hurt. GL!

Re: Updated...NEED HELP!!!DS is painfully constipated (TMI)
The suppository can take up to an hour for it to work and it will help. I had to use it last year on Easter and 2 or weeks ago. I use it as a last resort when I know his tummy is hurting and seems bloated. DS fights me putting it in too but it really does work.

It's been about an hour and so far nothing. And only 1/2 the stick dissolved. He pushed the other 1/2 out. I think he may be trying to hold it in now b/c it hurts him so much rather than pushing it out. He is in bed b/c he was so exhausted from pushing or trying to hold it in...I'm not sure. His face was beet red and he was screaming for about 15 min.

I'm not sure if it's ok for his age but what about looking into giving him some mineral oil? My SIL was told to do this for my nephew.

Poor baby I'd let him sleep and he might actually poop in his sleep if he's relaxed enough. See how he does in the morning if not and give the dr. a call

Straight juice (apple, pear,or prune)....next time you change his diaper make sure you put some vaseline down there so maybe it wont hurt so much...try to think of something that will make him poop to feed him in the morning. I usually do cereal or pancakes.
And if it doesnt work call the dr and see what laxative you can use

Try giving a 1/2 teaspoon of Mylanta. I know it sounds crazy, but it works! It works every time for my baby! My ped told me about this. Good luck.

Re: Updated...NEED HELP!!!DS is painfully constipated (TMI)
I have had this response to anesthesia. I would say COLACE would be the best thing to soften up the poo and help it easily come out. That's all I can think of right now.
ETA- I dont know if childrne his age can take it but maybe he can, check with the dr.

Re: Updated...NEED HELP!!!DS is painfully constipated (TMI)
When DD would get like that i would put vaseline when the poop was coming out (sorry TMI) and push down on the sides with 2 fingers to help it come out.
You can try to poke it with the thermometer when he is trying to push. It might break it up.
I know how hard it is.

Re: Updated...NEED HELP!!!DS is painfully constipated (TMI)
Kara has been constipated a few times and I gave her a Liqued Glycerin Suppository...made by Fleet. Worked with in half and hour and the last time it worked within min. It's a bulb with clear fluid in it that you squeeze so it doesn't have to dissolve. That's what my ped recommended. You may want to try that. Got it at CVS!! Hope he feels better tomorrow. Keep us updated.

Re: Updated...NEED HELP!!!DS is painfully constipated (TMI)
I read on line that drinking water with raisins soaked in it helps!
Raisins
Constipation Raisins are highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation. They should be soaked in a glassful of drinking water for 24 to 48 hours. This would swell them to the original size of the grapes. They should be eaten early in the morning, after discarding the stones. The water in which raisins are soaked should also be drunk. If this is taken every morning, will bring excellent results in case of chronic constipation. Raisins can be routinely given even to little infants as an extract in water to help regular bowel action. Six to ten raisins or more, depending on the child's age, can be soaked in boiling water and set aside for a while. When cool, the raisins should be thoroughly crushed to extract their juice into the water. For small children, the liquid could be strained and given so that the skin of the raisins does not upset the stomach

Re: Updated...NEED HELP!!!DS is painfully constipated (TMI)
Someone else mentioned Lactulose yesterday, its a sugar product that helps the colon to absorb water to aid with constipation. I would give your doctor a ring and ask about it. Its a great natural laxative.

Re: Updated...NEED HELP!!!DS is painfully constipated (TMI)
So DS finally painfully pooped this morning but only got out about 1/2 of what was in there. But at least it's something. I put a bunch of vaseline on his butt so that maybe it won't hurt as much when he pushes the rest out later He was walking around like he had a fish up his butt but that's seems better too
