I'm new to the neighborhood, mind if I steal your garbage can
So the house next to ours is a rental. Since we have been here (almost 3 years) there have been 4 different tenants
the most recent ones moved out a few weeks ago and a for rent sign was outside. Today, I come home and there is no for rent sign anymore and someone is there cleaning out the garage/studio area
I know it was not the landlord but I am not sure if it was the new tenant
when DH comes home, he realizes that whomever that was came and took our garbage can. It is filled with crap in front of the neighbors house
who DOES that 
I told DH as soon as the garbage men come tomorrow to take it back and tell the neighbors to not take sh!t without asking...I mean it is really not that big of a deal, we would have had no problem had they asked or even left a note but to just take it

we've had a cracked recycle bin taken by 1 neighbor- Hello- you steal something cracked all the way down the side and put it next to your and we KNOW its ours...
we had another recycle bin- stollen unknown as it was a windy day..
we had a garbage can stollen- and it was our ONLY CAN!... again- we saw which neighbor had it as dh puts it out without the lid on- so we still had the ld..

Oh man...I would be so tempted to dump the trash out of the can and take it back.
Not that it would solve anything...but I think they would get the hint not to touch my stuff

OMG, I JUST literally said the same thing to DH. He needs the can to dump some work stuff and I said "dump the **** on their driveway and take the can"...he just at me...maybe that is TOO much?

Our neighbor took ours once, so my dh waited until it was empty, took it back and spray painted our house # on it...it's huge too, like a foot & a half tall...there's no mistaking it now!

I guess you have to give them the benefit of the doubt, just in case there was some kind of misunderstanding. Although I'm not sure what it could be. But I would DEFINITELY go over and say something to them!
WTH, though? Why do people do stuff like that? We've had people throw stuff in our dumpster when we were doing work on our house and it always really p!ssed me off because there's nothing you can do about it.

i wouldn't say anything. i hate any confrontation with neighbors - its not worth it. just take it back. and do what my father does - your last name and house number large print spray paint or permanent marker.
