Most mortifyng conversation ever
Today I had a patient who was not happy to be seeing me. She was rude right from the point I went and got her from the waiting room. First she says that she's "stuck with" me.  Whatever. Then she says "I hope you know what you're doing."
I guess I didn't kiss her *** enough because as she's settling herself onto the dental chair she starts making weird faces and holding her hand up to her mouth like she's gagging. I'm thinking..."Great, a cranky gagging patient, this should go well" but I say "Mrs. H. are you ok? And she says.....
"You're perfume makes you smell like a scented tampon" 
She shocked me speechless for about 30 seconds.
She's sitting there with a smirk on her face, I was turning bright red. I finally got it together enough to tell her that in 15 years I have never had a patient treat me so ugly. That I would HAPPY to escort her up to the front desk and reschedule her with someone else.
She got up and stalked her way up front.
FTR, I was wearing two spritzes of "Heaven" by the Gap.

OMG!!!! i am mortified for you!! how terrible. what a be-otch. . . you're better than me. i probably owuld have risked my license and ripped every tooth out of her ugly head!!!!!! so sorry you had to deal with that!!!

I am glad that you told her to reschedule with someone else, that is TOTALLY inappropriate!!! You handled yourself well. I would have been like, "yea, well you smell like a scented a-hole"

This is probably one of the rudest comment I have hurt.
Aside from a client of mine telling me that I should come home with him and make love.
Glad you did not take her $hit. I would hope your office would kick her out completely to teach her a lesson and stand by what is appropriate behavior.

Gosh, That is really mean. I don't get how people can sleep knowing that they have been so hurtful to someone else. I am so sensitive though- I cant believe that I share air with people out there that have NO regard for others feelings- at all. Sad.
eta: she must have emotional issues or a medical syndrome? weird.

Luckily, the dentist wasn't mad that I rescheduled her. Our practice just recently bought this one and some of the patients have been really mean.

wow! You handled it VERY well. I know what it's like to deal with 'ugly' people (meaning rude, insensitive jerks). I used to be a weight loss counselor and nothing's worse than dealing with grumpy women who are unhappy with their bodies. OMG - some of them could be so mean. As tho it's MY fault they didn't lose another pound that week Ugh. I always tried to be professional, but it's hard!! Most times I would just give them that I'm gonna kill you if you don't shut the hell up kind of look (I do it so well) and they'd quickly back down without me having to say a word. Even tho most times I just wanted to reach out and choke 'em to death
I've never had anybody as rude as what YOU experienced though and I am so sorry you had to deal with that. What a miserable woman, I wonder what's up. But congrats to you for not slapping her across the face (like you probably wanted to).

Wow - that's just nasty! I seriously don't get how someone could think that it's ok to talk to someone like that! Big whoop - your dentist left & his office was bought by another practice...it's hardly a tragedy. Sorry that you had to deal with that

You know it had nothing to do with your perfume and the fact that she smirked afterwards was proof that she only said it to be rude. don't take it personally and please don't be embarrassed!  You did do the right thing too by sending her up. it just would have gotten worse.
it sounds like she had mental health concerns. few people are mean just to be mean, they usually have a 'reason.' being mean just to be mean is a mental health concern all in itsself. sad.
