gaining weight on a diet
Ok so I'm doing S. beach right? I keep gaining a couple of pounds, then maybe a week later I'll lose it but I feel like I'm losing 3 lbs, gaining 2, losing 2 lbs, gaining 1.
The scale keeps fluctuating and its not like I'm eating more. I'm in phase 2 now and I thought maybe eating some fruit would help- NOPE. I gained 2 lbs since yesterday and I only ate like 1100 calories all day.
WT F is going on???? Has this happened to anyone????

Re: gaining weight on a diet
How often are you weighing yourself? When I weigh myself everyday or even every other day it shows crazy numbers! I would pick once a week to do it and I think you'll come out with a more realistic number. If you're sticking to the diet then you really should be fine and I wouldn't worry too much about what the scale says anyway, more so how you feel.

Re: gaining weight on a diet
I did SB and lost weight doing it. I think you need to stay on phase 1 for more than 2 weeks and lose all the weight you want and then start incorporating fruit on and off. That is what I did the first time I did it. Its harder the second or third time around.
Also try not to eat after 8pm. I find that this helps with snacking and helps keep weight off.

Re: gaining weight on a diet
Here's a few things that could be throwing the scale off:
1. your body weight fluctuates 2 lbs throughout the day. Try to weigh yourself at the same time. 2. As the pp said, try to weigh 1x a week instead of daily. 3. are you working out? Muscle weighs more than fat so you could be gaining weight from building muscle mass. Do your clothes fit better?
I'm on week 3 of South Beach (just started Phase 2) and have only lost 2-3 lbs since I startedBUT am also working out so I think I am gaining muscle weight. My clothes fit SOOOO much better and I am getting rid of a lot of tummy flab.

Re: gaining weight on a diet
yea i need to stop weighing myself so often. I usu weight myself daily in the AM before I get in the shower.
Its just so frustrating- last night we were at a friends party and there was pizza and paninis there and everything looked SOOOOOOOO good! We didn't have anything! DH lost 3 lbs, I gained 2.
HOW IS THAT JUSTICE???!!!

Re: gaining weight on a diet
Oh I feel your pain! But seriously...hold off on weighing yourself for a while and you'll realize that you'll start to actually feel like you're losing the weight and just feelig better in general! (As long as you're sticking to your diet) I could feel amazing one day because I ate well and worked out--but if I step on the scale and it says something I don't want to see then it will ruin everything! Stay strong!!!

Re: gaining weight on a diet
Try (and i know it's hard trust me) to weigh yourself 1x weekly at the same time. So if you weigh yourself on Monday before you go in the shower do that every week. Good Luck!

Re: gaining weight on a diet
Day-to-day weight can fluctuate so much, depending on hormones, how much salt you ate the day before, and tons of other factors. Sure you didn't indulge at that party last night, but if you munched on a couple of 20-calorie pickles (for example) you could gain 2 pounds of water weight because of all that sodium. Sure it's only 40 calories, but the scale will be 2 pounds higher the next day. And the day after that, it'll be right again.
It's your weekly progress that counts! As long as the scale goes down every week, you're doing great!
(btw, though, 1100 calories is too low - if you're doing that every day, your metabolism will shut down, your body will eat at its muscle stores for energy and conserve fat stores, and you WILL gain weight)

Re: gaining weight on a diet
Are you drinking a lot of water? I guzzle like 4-5 bottles a day and make sure I am fully hydrated before bed, if I dont then my weight is usually up by a pound in the am.
How is your salt intake? Also are you working out or did you just start working out?

Re: gaining weight on a diet
I work out pretty regularly. I haven't been in the gm the past couple of weeks because I've been studying for the LSATs (which are monday) so I'm looking forward to getting back into the gym. I'm sure that has alot to do with it.
As far as calories, if I eat over 1200 calories a day, I gain weight. I don't know why. I've been tested for diabetes and thyroid problems but I just cannot lose this friggin weight!
I drink roughly 72 oz of water daily and I'm not eating any carbs right now. Idk about sodium...I'm mostly eating fruits, vegs and lean proteins. Maybe some of the cheeses I eat have sodium but I really try not to go nuts with it.
I'm at my wits end with this. My friggin husband lost 20 lbs already and I barely lost 5.
I'm better off eating pizza and cake seriously!
