fee for an estimate???
My DH has been quite surprised that the contractors I've contacted are asking for a fee ($200 or so) to do their estimates. (We're the ones who will need to practically gut the house.)
Is this Standard Operating Procedure these days? Please advise. Thank you.

Re: fee for an estimate???
We've had about 10 quotes over the past few months and none of them have charged. We even brought one company back and he didn't charge for a second visit.

Re: fee for an estimate???
I think if the contractor is good, he/she doesn't need to generate income by charging for estimates. I would call someone else.

Re: fee for an estimate???
We had at least 5 estimates for major work involving gutting our house and never paid a fee.

Re: fee for an estimate???
My DH does estimates all the time. Sometimes he gets the job and sometimes he doesnt BUT he never charges a fee. Although I can see why some people do. It takes time and effort to put together a proposal... more than one would think. I guess the people that charge for an estimate think their time is that valuable (or they are THAT good that people should pay for it )

Charging an fee for an estimate is very tacky. What is this... the auto service industry?

Re: fee for an estimate???
Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to this website and wanted to thank everyone for the feedback. It's very helpful as we negotiate the possibilities of becoming home owners. I'm very thankful someone told me about lifamilies.com!
