Problem w/ preschool... need advice please.

My son is suppose to start preschool in Sept. with a seit. I enrolled him in the school in January. Before then I had went to open house, (where I met with the principal) went back with my husband and son to meet with the teacher, and spoke to the principal on the phone at length discussing my son's allergies. I then gave them everything they asked for, med. records, baptismal & birth cert., (catholic school) and a check.

So now June 8th the principal calls me and informs me that before she can "accept" my son into the program she will need his IFSP. I said that's fine but I thought it was already enrolled. Then she asks me how long the "aide" will be with him in the class... I tell her an hour... She says "NO, the aide must be there the whole time." I told her that was not possible, that he was only allowed an hour of service, and that he does not have an aide, he has a seit. Anyway, she was very rude and told me that she won't discuss it until she gets the IFSP.

I called her today to let her know that the IFSP would take a few days because we don't have the most recent one. She said that would be no problem. I asked her when she would let me know if he was allowed into the program...

Then she says... and I say.
Well how is he socially? Fine, no delays.
Does he hit? Sometimes
Does he cry if he doesn't get his way? Sometimes.
Does he have temper tantrums? Yes, sometimes.
Well, that's not typical 2 year old behavior... um, okay I thought it was.

I told her that if she just gave him a chance she would see that he is just like every other child... He just does not always understand everything because he is language delayed.

So she asked to meet with me tomorrow... and "if there is any way we think he can fit in, we will let him attend." Nice right? It's not like I'm asking for a criminal to attend her school, he's 2, how could it hurt to give him a chance?

I'm looking into other schools now. The problem is it's June and most schools are out already. My question is, if I can't find anything else, should I let him attend if he can? I really feel like school would help him.

If you got this far, thank you! I'm sorry this is so long!

I would absolutely without a doubt NOT allow my child to go to a school that had a director with an attitude like that. I hope you can find another school Chat Icon

TOTALLY AGREE !
OMG !Chat Icon Im speechless and angry for you !!
Shame on her for speaking that way and implying your son was "not perfect" or not fit for her sschool. Chat Icon
that is dispicable behavior !

Im sure you can find another school that will acknowledge that all children are different, and NONE of them is perfect, and will allow each child to learn and develop at their own pace, nOT at the pace that the principal thinks will make her school look good.

Im Catholic (so I can say this Chat Icon ) but I wasnt surprised that this is a Catholic school. (im a product of public schools though Chat Icon )

But Ive seen a few cases where CAtholic schools havent dealt with indivudual issues properly or had services available for children that needed it.
one private school indirectly asked someone I know to take their child out of the school Chat Icon because this child "didnt fit the mold" (they didnt say that, but thats what they implied) of their perfect little school.

sorry, this topic hits home for me.
i hope you didnt leave a deposit there, please go elsewhere.
your child deserves to be welcomed with an open mind and an open heart...

I still cant get over these words from her. I would definitely make a stink about this, maybe give them negative publicity, write aletter to someone.
how heartbreaking to make a mom feel that way. Chat Icon Chat Icon

That is disgusting! I am furious for you!

Please look elsewhere. They would not be doing you any "favor" by "allowing" your son in their school.

What is he The Elephant Man????!!!!

Please tell me what areas you are looking in, and I will see if there are any decent pre schools nearby!

I totally agree. There is no way I would let my daughter go there with their attitude.

As I said in another post, our DD will be doing the same, using a SEIT in a typical preschool setting. I literally must have looked at over 25 preschools in the area to find the right fit. The school needs to understand how to handle a child with additional needs and also needs to understand the role of a SEIT. I went to plenty that sounded like the school you mentioned. One even told me that if my daughter cried to much or wouldn't participate in the craft that she would be expelled. Crazy people! I also went to alot that didn't understand the SEIT role and were thinking that they were aides to help them not just my DD.

I finally found a great teacher and my DD was comfortable in the classroom so that's what we went with. I also brought my therapist (who will be her SEIT) to the schools with us to get her opinion.

Good luck Chat Icon

ITA with everyone. As a teacher and a mom with a son who is language delayed, I'm appalled. How dare this woman say these things. This school is not lucky enough to have your son. I would definitly look else where. I would also maybe try contacting your school district and see if they can recommend other preschools in the area.

Re: Problem w/ preschool... need advice please.

sorry to hear about this! I'm an SLP and too often (but not always) religious schools give families headaches when their child wants to enroll with services (often any type or frequency level). I've seen them give grief over school aged kids with minimal levels of resource room or speech. I have less experience at the younger ages. Good luck to you!

Not acceptable! She sounds very rude and my child would not be going there.
What area are you looking in?
My 2.5 year old DS goes to a preschool.
If you want more info, FM me.

Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate it!

I found a new school today! The woman I met with was very nice, I explained the whole situation. She told me that they have many seits, and have no problem giving every child a chance in their school.

I skipped out on the meeting at Our Lady of Lourdes without even calling them, and the principal left me a really nasty message that my son won't be attending in Sept. I figured they didn't deserve a phone call. I will be sending her a letter though!

You ladies were right, I def. wasn't going to be sending him there after that. I just felt stuck because it was June. It worked out for the best though... The new school seems like a better fit. They are also a Catholic school, but they are only a preschool.

3mon- I'm totally not offended... Most of the Catholic schools I've looked were horrible, and so judgmental.

Thanks again everyone!

To let you all know the school we had the problem with is Our Lady of Lourdes in West Islip.

We are looking in the Bay Shore/ West Islip/ Babylon areas for a school.

I really like the one I saw today, but I'm willing to look at others if anyone has any ideas... Just in case.

I'm glad you found a new school!

In addition to writing a letter to the director, I would also send one to the diocese.
