No children allowed in Maternity at all North Shore LIJ hospitals
I just called North Shore Plainview to see about having my 5 year old tour the nursery, which I have been told that they do.
They told me due to the swine flu, no children under the age of 18 are allowed on the floor! It is a policy across all North Shore LIJ hospitals.
I know it is for the safety of the babies and I understand, but I will be so disappointed if my 2 children (5 and 18 months) can't come see me and the baby.
I'm due in September, so maybe it'll be lifted by then.
Just thought it might interest some of you with small children.

Re: No children allowed in Maternity at all North Shore LIJ hospitals
We were told that last month when we toured NSUH. I dont have any other kids so it doesnt effect me but what I think is weird anyone can get the swine flu so why limit it to anyone under 18?? That made no sense to me....

Yes. I was in the maternity area the other day at LIJ for a sono and saw the sign, also, when I made the appt they said no children under 18 were allowed to come with me. I'm delivering at NSUH and really hope this changes!

Re: No children allowed in Maternity at all North Shore LIJ hospitals
I am delivering at North Shore Plainview as well, probably in about 3-4 weeks and my DD (7 yr. old) is devastated she can't come up to the hospital. I am just praying that all goes well and I don't need a c-section and am stuck there for more than 2 days.

Re: No children allowed in Maternity at all North Shore LIJ hospitals
They lifted that ban (at least at NS Manhasset) about 2 weeks ago, I spoke to the director personally. I thought it was for all NSLIJ hospitals. My DD was able to come see me after I had the baby..the ban was lifted the day I went into labor!

My SIl deliovered 7/1 at southside hospital (NSLIJ) My kids visted ages 9, 2 and 1. I called before showing up of course and the rule had been lifted. It was in effect weeks prior, but not anymore. I hope your hospital lifts the rule by Sept too.

Re: No children allowed in Maternity at all North Shore LIJ hospitals
I'm having DH bring DD to see ME and her new sib on my 3rd day after the section at NSUH. If they don't allow it, I'll either mention an attorney or tell them to discharge me right there! I'm not a huge fan of kids in the hospital, but for section patients with other kids at home, it's more than just a "cute thing" to see the new baby. I'm NOT going 4 days w/o seeing my DD. She will have been out of daycare for a month so chances of her having the swine flu are less than that of DH who visits DOCTORS for work!! Guess he shouldn't come to the maternity ward either???

Re: No children allowed in Maternity at all North Shore LIJ hospitals
And if our children had swine flu, wouldn't our husband's be in very close contact with them anyway? And they are obviously allowed at the hospital.
Obviously, we are all mothers and none of us would be so irresponsible to bring a sick child into the maternity/nursery ward and risk getting their new sibling or any other newborn sick.
Hopefully, North Shore Plainview will be lifting the ban soon.

My friend just delivered at NSLIJ in Manhasset and her 2 yr. old daughter was allowed in. Siblings only...noone else under the age of 18. They lifted the ban about 2 weeks ago.

Re: No children allowed in Maternity at all North Shore LIJ hospitals
When me and DH went for our tour on Jun 22nd they told us that also. But my sister was in the hospital this past weekend and the weekend before and they allowed small children to visit. So I am guessing it has been lifted. I am sure your children will be allowed to visit. If those other children were there then it's ok.
