ITA with this. And it's not a vindictive thing, either, it's for the safety of the neighborhood. If someone verbally harassed me on the street or my child in her school, I'd take steps to create distance between us for safety's sake. Even though these words weren't spoken, they were communicated, and they are menacing, abusive, and harassing. Why give this person any incentive or payoff for prowling around your neighborhood now that you've been harassed/abused like that? Get the neighborhood on board. If someone's willing to bring all of the cans in, you can even donate the collective $$ to a charity, like MS research or something.

wow, I wouldnt put up with that....
in our neighborhood there is a homeless man who goes around and picks out the bottles for redemption and our/neighbors bins are never strewn out in the morning, good for him for doing that- working for it- rather than begging..... Shes guilty of LITTERING:-and I believe there are FINES for that

Just for the record, to the garbage picker-fan who thinks the OP'er is selfish... On my block, in a fairly affluent neighborhood, this guy drives around EVERY week in his lexus truck, parks it DOWN the street and walks DOWN the block sifting through the recycling picking out cans.
SO, let's not ASSume that all people who pick through garbage are destitute. I caught this dude RED HANDED picking through my garbage and it creeped me out.
OP, you're right for freaking out - I would have been PISSSED, too! OH, and keep crushing those cans! That woman is an ungrateful BEOTCH.

I honestly don't care if someone was sifting through my garbage if they really needed too, what would bother me is if they left a mess on my lawn and property, as the OP said the silly person did. That would really make me upset. It's not right. The note that was left by the picker, was horrible and very unstable. To the OP: Sorry that you had to receive such a nasty note. That was not cool.

I just can't get over the mentality of defending the OFFENDER.
I don't give a shyt what this person's situation was- she was wrong to make a mess and even more wrong to write a disgusting note like that. Why does she feel entitled to the OP's cans?
Econonic hard times doesn't excuse that behavior. Period.

I would have responded the exact same way that you did. i'm glad, however, that you decided not to confront her. You really never know with people like that (seeing as her notes weren't so pleasant). Is there any way that you can keep your garbage cans ON your driveway (so that they're not on the street but rather on your property) and still have them be taken by the trucks so that you don't have to get up so early to do it each morning?
I like that you're going to continue to crush the cans tho. lol. And I love the idea of getting the other neighbors to do the same. I'm a little evil too. Well, maybe not evil, but STUBBORN as hell. I wouldn't mind somebody taking the cans either, because I'm sure she needs the money. But leaving a mess is not acceptable and neither were her rude responses. It's your garbage, you have a right to do whatever you want with it. She has no right to complain.

well I saw the woman this morning. I just opened my door and she was at my neighbors house, she looked at me, gave me a dirty look and then put her head down. My lawn was clean.
NOT SAYING I KNOW HER HOME SITUATION BUT, she was dressed well and her new Excursion was nice and shiny.
