I think you should definitely call the police but I think that going out of your way to spite this person for suggesting that you sort your cans was a little much. I understand it was way out of line, but have a little compassion for someone who has to pick out of people's trash cans in order to live.
I disagree completely. That woman has NO business doing what she did, if ANYONE steped foot on my property and did that, the police would be called period..just cause you are in "need" does not give you the right to be destructive and nasty to someone else

Re: I cant believe the ball$ on this person
Posted by bellaluna But why should she ignore it? The response note was hostile and spiteful to begin with. She owes this person nothing and frankly I cannot empathize with someone who was down right rude and disrespectful for throwing her unwanted recycles all over her lawn in the first place. She was beyond presumptuous IMO with that response in to the OP's first note. She should have written " sorry about that, I will be careful next time " instead of being an ingrate to "free money" and personal property.
Even if crushing the cans was done out of spite why would you side with someone who is breaking the law and threatening her ? I don't get it .
Because I believe in having compassion for someone who has to rummage through cans to get money, that's why.
If the OP crushed the cans because she thought that it would stop the mess, then I apologize for saying it was spiteful because then there was a legitimate reason for it.
But if she just did it so this poor, possibly crazy person can't have them, then it's mean. She's within her rights to do it, and she should certainly take steps to make sure the mess doesn't happen again but to jump from a presumptuous note from SOMEONE LIVING OFF OF CANS to a 'Well if you're gonna be presumptuous then none for you' attitude was harsh.

Obviously not since that's why the OP is having this issue. It sounds like a very high and mighty "I'll teach you a lesson" attitude that rubs me the wrong way. It's a desperate time for people and they get frustrated and do things out of character. It was a NOTE, it's not like the rummager keyed her car.

well the lady did not know she crushed the cans until the last time she snuck onto her property to check...I would assume going forward the lady will find someone elses garbage to rumage through...maybe it will be yours and then you can tell us how it is wonderful that there is garbage all over your lawn and hateful messages on your door

I disagree , I don' t think it was harsh at all , I think she was responding the blatant disregard for a simple request made to not destroy her property. Just because someone is poor does not give them the right to be a nasty b*tch and I would have done the same exact thing .If someone , regarless of their personal misfortune is going to be disrespectful they deserve to be "taught a lesson" .

I agree. Please file a report with the police.
This is not a stable person. A stable person would have taken what they wanted and not made the mess the second time after your polite note.
Think about it.
If you decide to do anything else involving this crazy person you are putting yourself at risk and possibly your property as well. ITA - Please be careful

That is exactly why I thought the OP did it. If the cans and bottles were not there, this person would not rummage through her garbage and leave everything out on the lawn.
I understand the OP's frustration. She tried to be compassionate by asking the person, not to stop, but to not leave a mess. That person's response was that the OP should separate the cans and bottles. There was no remorse for the mess left. This is clearly a person, while in need, who does not care about the reprucssions of her actions.
Therefore, I think the OP's point in crushing the cans was to prevent this person from coming back and leaving a mess.

To the OP- call the police. This person isn't stable and knows where you live. I'd want a police report on file and some information on this person.

I would be nice and sort the cans so there wouldn't be any nasty messages on my door. My family would know that when you have a can to throw away, it goes in this garbage can. All other recyclables go in the other garbage can. Not hard at all to help out a person in need.
If I knew someone around my neighborhood was having a hard enough time that they were rummaging through my garbage, I would want to help them, not teach them a lesson.

I think you should definitely call the police but I think that going out of your way to spite this person for suggesting that you sort your cans was a little much. I understand it was way out of line, but have a little compassion for someone who has to pick out of people's trash cans in order to live.
Just b/c the person may need Money doesnt justify them putting the garbage on the lawn or their rudeness. People are accountable for all their actions broke or not
I said that she should call the police and that it was out of line for the person to have requested that the OP sort the cans.
My point was that going out of her way to crush all those cans and peel of the labels was spiteful and she should consider the desperate circumstances people are under before taking that action. She could have just ignored the last note and hoped the person was neater in the future. If the mess continued, she could have called the police at that point.
How was it spiteful ? The OP stated right away she does not mind people collecting cans to recycle , and left a nice note asking her to pleae not throw the rest of the stuff on her lawn. The woman then had the b*lls to write she should pre-sort everything FOR HER. The OP has the right to crush any cans she wants since this woman had no regard for her personal property AND is technically tresspassing on her property. Why she she HOPE that this person is neater? How is that fair? It is HER property, and HER cans.
This woman had NO EXCUSE for behaving the way she did, and she should and being desperate is no excuse for being rude .
To the OP- I am a confrontational person by nature, but this loon knows where you live. I would call the police and let them handle it so you have a Attach Images:
Accepted formats are .jpg and .gif. Maximum file size is 60kb. Notify me every time someone replies to this topic
record of it .
And as I said, she could have just ignored the last note and hoped the person was neater in the future. If the mess continued, she could have called the police at that point.
She has now spent her time and money in order to prevent this other person from having the cans and the only reason she did it was to prevent the rummager from having them because the rummager was presumptuous. It was spiteful, regardless of whether it's fair, her property, or legal.
Wow thanks for that. Sorry that after a month of this nonsense, where i have to go and pick up her mess, going through my garbage. Take what you want, but why would you leave a mess and then ASK ME to pre-sort for her? I asked her very nicely to just take what she needed.
Call me whatever you like, but cleaning up stuff I had already placed in the garbage at 7:30 in the morning is not something I really want to do.
And for the record, talking with a neighbor today, she had problems with this woman as well, but it was confrontational.

Are you kidding me? really? listen I'm the kind of person that would give my last $1 to help someone, but dont take that kindness for weakness. The woman is rude and disrespectful. I'd be happy to help her if she rang my bell and said "i'm having a little problem this month would you help?" I would, so dont you dare go calling me spiteful until you actually know me

It's a desperate time for people and they get frustrated and do things out of character. It was a NOTE, it's not like the rummager keyed her car.
And that's why she should call the police. She tried the nice way and she has to protect herself. She should not wait until her car is keyed or much worse. Desperate people can do desperate things.
If she wasn't such a b!tch about it, I'm sure the OP would actually offer the cans and perhaps more to a person in need. Once you cop an attitude that the world owes you something then you are on your own.

The OP didn't say whether the rummager was in fact neater after she left the first note. If the rummager was neater and left a note suggesting that the OP should sort them, then it sounds to me like the OP was just doing it so the rummager couldn't have them anymore because she was mad about the note.
If the rummager left a huge mess even after the OP's note, then you're right, she should have crushed the cans and I am totally wrong.
And no she wasnt neater after the first note
Then I apologize. You acted on the person's behavior, not just their note. The way you presented the story made me think otherwise.
And besides, I'm a perfect stranger. Who cares what I think of you?
And in that same sentiment, you DONT know me, so who are you to call me spiteful?

But if she just did it so this poor, possibly crazy person can't have them, then it's mean. She's within her rights to do it, and she should certainly take steps to make sure the mess doesn't happen again but to jump from a presumptuous note from SOMEONE LIVING OFF OF CANS to a 'Well if you're gonna be presumptuous then none for you' attitude was harsh.
I don't know if this was pointed out already, but doesn't it seem like the person who threw even more garbage all over her lawn and then THREATENED the OP is just as spiteful and WRONG???
And I know plenty of people who do what this person is doing and aren't hard up for cash.. so you can't even begin to assume.

Because this is the internet and when you post something on a message board, you open yourself up to comments. Based on the way you wrote your post, you left out the key piece of info that the rummager made a mess even after you left the note. Without that info, it sounded like you were being spiteful. After you clarified, I apologized and I sincerely mean it. Get over it.
