Can I just tell you about my new principal for a second?
Here's been my experience with her thus far:
--I asked her what grade I'd be teaching, she said she'd let me know by the middle of July. I got a generic letter, addressed to all the staff, saying that I was being welcomed to 5th grade. Thanks for the heads-up.
--She told me I couldn't use my white bookcases in my classroom because, "Don't you see how everything else in the room is light-colored wood? They don't match".
--She told me I needed to "watch the tone" of my emails. When I asked for an example of what she meant, she pointed in my email to the part where I wrote, "Good Morning, Mrs. X" and told me it was too informal.
And last, but certainly not least...
--She drives an expensive sedan with the license plate "All4Her"

I seriously pray for you since you don't have a union to back you up because that one seems like she would be out of there already if it was my school
Tell her she is free to buy you new light colored wood bookshelves then!

Yeah.
I asked one of the other 5th grade teachers today, "Is this just a front, or what?" to which she replied "OHHHHH no. And don't EVER assume ANYTHING. Make sure you ask, even if you think it's a stupid question".
This teacher went on to tell me that name plates are not allowed on the desks, I'm not allowed to number the cubbies, and I'm not allowed to hang ANYTHING on the walls.
It's gonna be an AWESOME year.

How long has she been a principal there for? I feel that would drive teachers OUT of the building to find a job elsewhere! (pending what the job situation is like down there... since in NYC you have to be lucky to get a job these days)
Does she have ANY friends in the building? She has to be nice to at least SOMEONE....... she can't just be this way to everyone she comes across! yikes!
ETA: sorry, I just want to clarify, I didn't mean to offend since I know you just got this job.... am I right? ... I realized after I made this post that I could have been more sensitive  .. In any case, I think that perhaps a lousy principal like that could bring the other staff even closer! Because I assume everyone can develop a common bond over despising this woman!

wait??? you cant hang anything on the walls? where are you to hang it on the kids backs? how can you have a classroom with out stuff on the walls.

Unfortunately, IIRC, she works in NC, where there is no union. Basically, the OP is forced to deal with the whims of her principal.

Yup--this would be the same winner that is the reason I have to be at school this SUNDAY. To meet parents and students.
I still can't get over her license plate--I think that says it all.
