Edible Favor business questions

I was just wondering if any of you BTDT edible favor businesses would like to throw a few tips my way. I am considering starting a side business here in Georgia (where I live). I know I can make the cookies, lollipops, cupcakes, etc but I was wondering about all the things I am sure I am not thinking about. What made you start your business and if you feel like sharing business tips I would greatly appreciate it. No competition, I am only selling locally and I am in Georgia. Thanks in advance. It is a little overwhelming. Making the stuff is fun it is the rest of the details that I am up to my eyeballs in.Chat Icon

first thing you should check out is the food licensing in your area and insurance requirements. I looked into this in NY and you need to have an outside kitchen that has to be inspected, and i believe there were food safety classes you had to take.

I live in PA now and i have a chocolatier friend who does it from her home, as that is allowed. However her kitchen needs to be inspected.

thats the first thing i would check along with insurance b/c god forbid anyone get sick on your chocolate, you can be in big trouble if not insured.

also check with your local town/chamber of commerce about registering for sales tax license. you can probably find that online.

Food license... there is a thought. This is going to get complicated. Do all the businesses on here have food licenses? Some say you need a seperate kitchen and stuff. I have to look into it. You have definitely given me more to think about. Thank you!!

if you're actually handling and making the chocolates and cookies, then yes, you should have certification. You do not want anyone getting sick off something you made and suing you personally..they can go after anything in your name. Which is also why you should incorporate the business and look into small business insurance. Lots of insurance companies offer it. this way if something happens they can sue the corporation or go through your insurance.

if you're just distributing products that are already made (like pre-made cookies/lollies/favors) and they are sealed and will not be making it, thats different. You dont need a handling license for that.

FM if you have any other questions.
