did you mean to adopt from? or in general?

we went a few times - the first time we went was a wed night, they had nothing that peaked our interest - but the volunteer who helped us told us to come back on sat morning (dh works which stunk but i went alone) - and sure enough they had loads of puppies and new dogs and cats - it gets crowded and people snap up pets quick but we couldn't be happier with our lil Louie! :)

Some of the animals were sick (think of a classroom - if one is sick, they can all get it) but they give you free meds and check ups for the dog until they are better - plus like a 2 or 3 week (can't remember) guarantee you won't find anything else wrong with your pet as their vets must check the animal again right before you leave..Louie had a cold which cleared up within two days but we gave him the meds for a week to be sure - when we took him back he was fine!

you do have to give two numbers as references - they will call them on the spot (so if you go on a sat pick two people who are home!) - and in my case, since my dh wasn't with me, they called him too! (apparently lots of people just adopt against their so's wishes!)

we fully support them now because Louie gives us so many reasons to smile...he's still a puppy so sometimes he frustrates us but he has come a far way (and neevr has been a "bad" dog - in fact, never pooped once in our house!) and is really our lil pride and joy! i would recommend them to anyone...


one more thing, you can also always ask them if you are looking for a specific size dog or color or sex, etc - and they will check the back- i saw a cute female puppy that was black and white but dh and i had decided on a male dog so i asked and then they brought us Louie - he had just come in the past thurs and had been neutered on friday - but was well enough to come home with us - i melted when they borught him out to us...

Throughtout my childhood we had a few dogs from NSAL. The first two had genetic heart problems and both died of heart attacks at age three NSAL perfromed an autoposy both times and said it was a completely genetic... totally random which we believe. We don't think NSAL know at all when we adopted them. When I was 18 we got our first puppy there (a husky/German shepard mix) named Niko and she lived until 10 years old.

I think it's a wonderful organization and I like how they thoroughly check out all the potential pet parents.
For example, years ago they didn't want my Dad (a single parent) adopting a dog... they wanted someone home all day with the dog and a fenced in yard. A family friend posed as his wife so we could get the dog

I highly recommend a shelter dog. I swear they know they have been rescued and are so grateful to their new family for saving them. They are the best.

We adopted two dogs from NSAL over the years. Our first was a 1 year old terrier mix and we had her until she was 13. Still breaks my heart that she is not here Our other one was a 3 month old shepherd, chow mix who is 4 years old now and one of the best dogs we have ever had. Both dogs didn't have any health problems and the shepherd, chow was spayed by them for free. An excellent place to adopt a dog. They usually run an adopt-a-thon some time in May and, literally, have thousands of dogs to choose from. Good luck.

My friend adopted a dog from North Shore and he was awesome. He was an absolute sweetheart...he was a sheperd/lab mix...no health problems!

There are also rescues for specific breeds. I know they have them for labs, and I am sure for others. Also the Guide Dog Foundation in (Smithtown?) raises Labs and mixes of Labs and other breeds for guide dogs. But not all of them are guide dog material. They put some up for adoption if they are not trainable for guide dogs - and these have already been trained in the basics (sit, stay, heel, etc.). This is where I plan to get my next dog because I want a lab again. And they need homes too!
