Re: READ ALOUD suggestions
Are you looking for chapter books?
I always start the year by reading aloud The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. The kids *love* this book. I started reading it to my new class last week. They groaned when they saw that we were starting read-aloud on the first day, but now they practically yell at me when I leave off at the end of a chapter. It's a hit over and over again!

Re: READ ALOUD suggestions
I read Deep and Dark and Dangerous to the 6th grade class I was doing my student teaching in. Great ghost story novel for Halloween. Another book I have to get that I loved in 4th grade was The Last Slice of Rainbow. It's a collection of fairy tale/fantasy stories.

Re: READ ALOUD suggestions
Many of my friends are teachers (I was also teaching, but now I am a SAHM)
one of their favorite books for the 4th/5th grades is Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff. It's a great book and the students really seem to enjoy it.

Re: READ ALOUD suggestions
I teach 5th. We usually start the year with a book by Andrew Clements like Room One, The Report Card or No Talking.
I also love The Giver as a read aloud. It is a science fiction book on a 6th grade reading level.
Holes is also a great read aloud too, but a lot of the kids saw the movie. Although the book is very different.
Other suggestions are: Loser by Jerry Spinelli Waiting for Helen to Come
Hope this helps.
