Should I take the ATAS? (Help with options)

Hi there.
I have been trying to find work with kids and hitting some roadblocks. Most of it is that I have no recent experiences or references - I haven't worked with kids in 5 years, but I do have a lot of experiences from before then.

I have a BA in Liberal Arts (I was an early childhood/family studies major but changed it).

I have been thinking of taking the ATAS, so I at least have something that says I am competent in something lol But hopefully will also help me get a job.

What kind of jobs can you get with it? Are there even any amiable these days? Any jobs with younger kids? Do I need other certification before getting a job (as an assistant or a parapro)?

Also, how long is it until it expires? I have read 1 year and also 3 years.

I have been trying to research some options, but it is soooo confusing!

Anyone? 5 p.m. today is the deadline for registration for the Oct. test. I was really hoping to get some help.

All the information can be found on the state website... the atas is an exam used for teaching assistant/paraprofessional certification.
