Bumpers for Newborns
So I know that Bumpers have a high risk of causing SIDS for newborns, however, I Know everyones pictures of nursery's have bumpers in the baby's crib! So my question is, did you take out the bumbers when you brought your child home from day 1 or did you just place him in one of those stationary pillows (i am unsure what they are called..not the boppy) so that there was not as big of a risk for the baby to roll into the actual Bumpers. How long should you be concerned with the Bumpers causing suffication?

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
I put the bumpers in but folded back a section of it to allow for better air flow. I believe the 'experts' say that beyond 6 months, SIDS risk declines dramatically.

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
i didnt put bumpers in at all. I dont have a sleep positioner either (i think thats the pillow that you're talking about). I did get a breathable bumper for when shes older and starts rolling over so that she doesnt get her arms or legs stuck in between the bars, but its not necessary at this point (DD is 5 weeks).

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
I never had bumpers. We did put breathable bumpers in when they were around 6 months to keep the pacifiers in the crib.

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
I didn't use bumpers, was too paranoid. However, DD is now 7.5 months and I need to put them in because she's a crazy mover when she's sleeping. The other morning she was laying with her feet to the back of the crib and her head to the front and everytime she moved she hit her head on the crib since she as tall as the crib is wide

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
We had bumpers in from the day we set up our crib until we turned it into a toddler bed at 2.

Mine never made it out the package. I use the breathable ones. I'm glad I did. My baby started rolling over at 3 weeks!

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
I never bought or registered for a crib set for this reason. When DS started to move around his crib, we put in breathable bumpers.

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
No bumpers and no sleep positions for us, per the current AAP recommendations.
The recommendation is for nothing soft in the crib until 1 year (though I wouldn't put bumpers in even then, as that is about the time they start to climb).

So then for those of you who did not use bumpers, does BRU sell all of the different pattern sets without the bumpers? Can you buy all of the comforters sheets and skirts separately?

Okay maybe I am completely retarded (good thing I am not having a kid for another 2 years..hence why I am starting to read the forums now to prepare) but does this mean that you cannot put the blankets in the crib as well? If not, then what is the purpose of getting those comforters?

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
There is no purpose! I bought the whole set and still have not used the blanket and bumpers...DS is 16 months. A big waste of $$$$.

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
I took them out of the crib when we brought DS home....but once he started rolling over and banging his noggin into the rails at about 2 months....I put them back. Every child is different and I know my DS is strong enough to move his face away from objects!

There is no purpose at all, I only used DS blanket when we had cpmpany and I "made" the bed. Bumpers I used breathable. Sleep positioners are a no no too.

Bumpers were in from Day 1 till my older DD was out of the crib. Bumbers are in for DD#2 as well.

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
I've bought bumpers but never used them. I love how they look in the crib and all the store show the crib with bumpers but I never used them. I just did not feel comfortable.

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
I have very thin bumpers in the crib and i make sure they are really tucked in...
i agree that the sleep positioners are a big no no....
i also agree that the set it a big waste of $$$ as i only used the comforter as a blanket on the floor when ds was young and immobile (had to find some use for it)

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
At 3 months, when she went in the crib , we never had the bumpers in. At about 7 months, when she could really move around we bought the breathable bumpers bc her arms and legd were getting trapped outside the crib and she kept throwing her pacifiers out!
Even in our bedroom in the bassinet, since all the sides are closed, we always kept the ceiling fan on for circulation

i never used the comforter or the bumpers - we def wasted money on the whole bedding set! We really ony needed the bed skirt and the sheets! Oh well.

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
we used the bumpers from day one. DS was not the kind of baby who moved around a lot and so i felt comfortable doing so. we only took them out recently when he started stepping on them

We put them in just before DS turned 5 months. He turns as the night goes on and his legs were getting caught between the slats.

Re: Bumpers for Newborns
I had them in from day one. Abby was swaddled until she was 4 months old. I Jimmy rigged her bumpers on the outside of her crib when we took the swaddle off of her. Then when she was standing, I took them off altogether because she used them as a step. I never worried about SIDS with her.

We used them from the time DD started sleeping in the crib at 3 months.
But we also used a sleep positioner AND a blanket...we broke all the rules
