I have honestly always found it ironic that atheists organize to promote athiesm. Not against their right to do it or their beliefs at all - but always found it a tad ironic.
Can I ask where the irony is? Not being snarky or anything, I just don't see where it is. A group of people want to promote their belief that there is no Higher Power. Why is that ironic?
I cant speak for kara- but I was under the impression that most atheists were anti- organized religion, so it would be ironic to me that they were organizing to discuss their beliefs or non-belief of god
either way- I think the billboard is good- I think its great to expose people to different beliefs and maybe this will help with that

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
I'm all for it..
i read in AM NY today that people are upset that these posters are being put in the subway - a woman was quoted as saying something like 'we all should believe in god, so these posters are wrong' and another said something along the lines of 'i teach my kids to believe in God and if they see these posters they'll think mommy is a liar'
so its ok for any church to advertise, because they're accepting of God. but when an organization advertises that is against the idea of god, its not ok? Freedom of speech gets thrown out the window when its not your belief?
I have to laugh at some of the narrow minded people out there
ftr, this isn't intended for any of the previous posts on here, just at what i read in the newspaper today

I see nothing wrong with everyone's beliefs being out there.
I do get what Kara means though. Atheism has always seemed to *me* to imply against organazation..and this seems likean organized effort.

I have read similar discussions on other message boards. How about teaching kids that there other beliefs and that it's ok and to be curious, understanding and accepting of them?

Well I don't like the Jews for Jesus or Scientology followers that bother me with their literature every other day.
At least these folks are paying to get their message out there isntead of jumping in your face.

I'm not an atheist so what do I know, but your thoughts (and possibly Kara's) probably highlight why this group feels the need to advertise - because an atheist is someone who doesn't believe in God, which does not necessarily have to have anything to do with believing in organized religion.
Because you can believe in God and not believe in organized religion - I may fall into that category although I usually just label myself as a bad Catholic.

I take the subway at least 10 times a week and on nearly every trip through Grand Central and Times Square I see the following
Watchtower people Jews for Jesus Scientologists End of the world preachers
I'm yet to see anyone up in arms about any of those activities.
So why is that ok and this isn't?

There are plenty of those already, maybe not in the subway, but above ground, or even on TV.
I remember Church of Latter Day Saints commercials. Sunday sermons on TV. Signs in every town to come to XXX church for Holiday celebrations. Flyers for this bake sale, that tag sale sponsored by a church.
If someone was promoting those things for Atheists or another alternate religion (Wiccans, etc) I would bet there would be plenty of outrage.

I get stopped by Jews for Jesus EVERY DAY on the subway and am asked if I am Jewish. SOOOO annoying!
Signs are fine IMO. I just don't like people pushing their beliefs (whatever they are) on me.

I am atheist and am all for any organized religion if it can help a person handle hard situations and be a better citizen. I have no animosity, dislike, distaste towards organized religion - it's just not what I believe.
I would say the majority of my friends are atheists and we do get together and have "religious" discussions - based on science.

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
I have no problem with these posters, and I am not an atheist.
Over the years, I have had MANY people push their beliefs on me in the subway, usually screaming them at the top of their lungs, and almost all were Christian. One was Muslim. Never an atheist.
If someone wants to install ads that I can read or ignore as I wish, I have no issue with that.

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
AMEN!
oh.. wait... nvm
In all seriousness, I think this is great.
Just being good shouldn’t be a by product of only those in the standard religions. I believe that this is a good way of giving people an option to find out more information about alternatives. Believing or not believing in God is up to each individual person. Its hard enough to question what you may have been raised to believe as ‘faith’ its good to know there are others out there willing to be open to your questions and concerns and may even share your opinions and ‘beliefs’ if you will.
So I applaud this. Its so much better than beer ads I might add.
I frankly don’t know or care much which little tag the world wants to give me as far as religion. What I believe or don’t believe in does make me who I am and moves my decisions. The opinions of others about atheists and agnostics has always irked me and I tend to lean towards labeling myself an agnostic in some ways.
At the end of the day information, questions and concerns about anything you’re about to give your blind faith to is always a good thing. As long as we all try to be good to one another, treat the world kindly and basically stop being self-absorbed and think of a bigger picture… I say call it whatever you want, religion, faith, atheists whatever. Just don’t use it as justification for murder, violence and tyranny and expect me to support it.\
This is tasteful and direct.

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
Yeah? And? So people are good without God. I'm one of them, I don't think they need to advertise it But really, they're promoting their coalition, not atheism. So really, it's like saying, "Don't worship God, just support our group in place of it." Ok, that's a stretch, but still. I think it's stupid.

What's their agenda? I don't get it.
me either.
I'm Catholic, and I'm a good person. But I think I would be a good person even if I didn't believe in Jesus.

that is what they are saying, that even people who do not believe in god can be "good"

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
What makes me feel unsettled about this ad is that the slogan is placed over clouds....which makes you think immediately of heaven, or what most peoples notion of heaven is (upwards in the sky). I realize its intentional but it makes me feel sad.
Probably because I love my religion, could not get through tough times of my life without religion etc...and I have never once cared who believes or doesn't believe in religion or god or anything for that matter. People are "good" based on their character and own morals, not because they say their religious. I just don't really understand the need for the ads but whatever...free speech I guess!

i don't think you have to belong to any "religion" to be a good person...so i guess it's a positive thing...i have noticed some people are jerky towards people who "don't believe".....i was raised catholic but i don't follow or believe any of it and some people look down on that i think....

Re: Atheism is coming to the subway near you
Where are they getting their statistics?
And FWIW, I totally didn't read that "good" as "being a good person" - I thought it was "good" as in "cool".
I just think the whole thing is weird.
