Good Sam. Recovery Rooms???

My DH came home tonight and said after talking with a co-worker that recovery rooms at Good Sam. are shared??? Maybe I am just nieve but are you kidding me? I have to share a room with someone who just gave birth as well while their family and friends come in? Are the babies put under lock down at night or with you at night???

Re: Good Sam. Recovery Rooms???

When i delivered at good sam i had a private labor/delivery/recovery room... you stay in the same room for it all... however if you have a csection that is sceduled you will most likely not deliver on the l & d floor as the use the regular or for them and save the or in l & d for emergency c/s's.. so that maybe where the shared recovery room comes into play... also if the ldrs are full with vaginal births and you go in for a c/s they may move you to a monitoring room afterwards for recovery which is also a shared room.... but as long as they are not filed, the primary ldrs are private...

eta... the baby location i believe is a preference... i had ds with me but i was in a "contact" room due to the fact that i am an mrsa carrier so he was not allowed in the nursery... but i know my girl friend had her dd with her 24/7

I had a private L & D and recovery room and I loved it.... It felt like we were in a hotel. I'm not sure if it was b/c it wasn't a C section, but the private rooms helped for a great experience!

Re: Good Sam. Recovery Rooms???

your question is a little confusing because your talking about recovery and then having the baby in with youmaybe you can clarify what your concerns are?...

I delivered at good sam just about 4 months ago. I had an emergency c-section. when i got to the hospital they put me in a labor/delivery/recovery room. These are Private. you are usually only in there for labor delivery and then for a short period after birth. Then you are moved to another floor for post partum which is where the nursery is. These rooms are NOT private. unless you get lucky there is one private room which is very small,or you get lucky with no roommate which i did a few nights. You cannot have the baby room in with you at night. They will bring the baby in for feedings but as far as the baby sleeping in the room with you thats not allowed. We werea llowed to pick the baby up at 9am and keep her till11pm. they did have to take her back for shift change once a day. They babies have baby lojack on their umbilical cords.

i hope i answered your questions if i didnt and you have more please ask!

ETA: my section was done on the L&D floor because it was an emergency, but i had a private recovery room after the delivery. If it was scheduled the section would have been done in the regular OR and im pretty sure the recovery room isnot private here

Re: Good Sam. Recovery Rooms???

I delivered by scheduled c/s at Good Sam on October 12. I was fortunate enough to have a private room, which is rare. Other hospital rooms are shared with another person. It depends how busy they are. There were 11 babies when I got there and 45 when I left. I don't think anyone had a roommate when I arrived, and by the time I left there were moms on other floors because they ran out of space.

It was my choice about whether to keep the baby in the room with me at night. I kept her one night and let them keep her the other nights. I know others had their babies with them all night, as I heard cries at 3am.

The baby lojack system was switched to ankle bracelets while I was there. (Think Martha Stewart under house arrest kind of tag.)

HTH.

That is what i thought about keeping the baby in the room since i know my gf had all four of hers with her 24/7.... however since i didnt have the choice and ds was with me 24/4 i can tell you i would of rathered him be taken away for one night, atleast the first night for even 3-4 hours... i was so exhausted but was paranoid of leaving him in the room alone while i went to the bathroom... especially since i was in a private room... and it would have been nice to get one night of sleep since i was exhausted

interesting that they changed the lojacing system... unless they ran out of them since they had so many babies??

They told us in June when we went for the c/s class that they would be switching the alarm system in August. They got delayed and only did it two weeks ago. When DD was born, they gave her the belly button tag, but two days into it, she got an ankle tag also. (They ran both systems concurrently for a few days.) The babies that were coming in toward the end of my stay got only the ankle tag. HTH.

IMO, the ankle tag is better. The belly button tag gets in the way when you are changing their diapers. Also, it seemed so heavy on their little bellies!

Re: Good Sam. Recovery Rooms???

I spoke with L&D at Good Sam.. They said that the only way you have to share a room with anyone is if you have a scheduled c-section. They said each scenario is different based on c-sections. She said if it is a natural birth you are in the same room alone through the entire process.

I don't want you to be dissapointed so I'm not sure if you asked the right thing. Yes, the recovery room is private - this is the room you labor and give birth in. You will be in this room the whole time in labor and for about an hour after you give birth.

THEN you are transferred to another floor where more than likely you will share a room with someone for your duration of your hospital stay. This is not called a "recovery room" anymore. You will see that persons friends and family and will share a bathroom with that person.
Both your babies will be in the room with you unless you send them back to the nursery.

Your original post is a little confusing - so please know that the recovery room will most likely be private but only you and DH and possibly one more person are ever even allowed in this room. Your family and friends will visit you when you are on another floor with another new mommy most likely sharing the room.

It all works out in the end. Don't worry too much. Before you know it, you'll be taking that little one home

Re: Good Sam. Recovery Rooms???

I can't speak from experience, as this is my first baby, but, my mom is the head of the recovery room at Good Sam, so I do know a bit about that. If you have a scheduled c-section, as pp has mentioned, you may be in the OR of the hospital - not the ldr one. Then, there is a good chance that you will be recovered in the main recovery room (don't think it's definite though.) The main recovery room does not have separate rooms - it is one big open room with many beds, so in that sense, yes, you would be sharing. But, it's not like many people are able to visit you in the recovery room anyway. You won't be there for long.

As for myself, if I end up with a scheduled c-sect, I'm pretty sure I know which recovery room I'll be in Chat Icon But that's completely okay with me, because the nurses in there really are fantastic and completely know what they are doing.

Re: Good Sam. Recovery Rooms???

I had a vaginal delivery at Good Sam 10 weeks ago. When I first got there I was sharing a room because there were sooo many people delivering that night. I was in the shared room for several hours and then finally got moved to a private labor/delivery room. I was in there with just me and DH and whoever visited throughout the day. Once DD was born, I should have been moved to the postpartum/maternity floor to a shared room within an hour or so, but there was, once again, no room for me. All of my visitors had to visit me in the labor/delivery room (which they never bothered to clean up- all DH's firemen friends got to see the bloody aftermath of having a baby. Oh- and his brother almost passed out when he saw the messChat Icon.)
About three hours later they brought me back into the triage room I started the day in. It WAS a shared room, which sucked because my roomates husband was there until like 2 in the morning bringing her burger king and chatting away. It was impossible to get sleep. First thing the next morning her 3 young kids came and were quite loud and annoying. I was able to keep the baby with me but kept begging them to take her back because I was deperate for sleep. The nurse would take her and then hand her back a minute later when she'd cry saying she had separation anxiety Chat Icon. The next day I was finally brought to the maternity floor at about 3pm and once again had a shared room, but my roomate was very nice, quiet and respectful. She shared her pads with me and her hubby asked constantly if I wanted anything from the cafe or whatever.

Anyway- the moral of the story is that the maternity rooms are shared, where you deliver is private and the baby can stay with you all night if you choose.
