WWYD? Long

Last week I took my class to the Scholastic book fair, which was held in the library. One of my students stole some pens and a few other things (no books). She put them up the leg of her pants. When the kids were lining up in the hall, the stuff started falling out, the other kids noticed and ratted her out. She got suspended.

I found out later that she also stole some items from the art teacher.

I am taking my class on a trip in a couple of weeks- to see A Christmas Carol, visit the tree and have lunch. When I handed out consent forms, I didn't give one to this girl. I told her that I don't feel that I can trust her. There won't be much opportunity for her to steal from stores but I do worry that she might steal again, from her classmates.

Afterwards, I felt bad, like I was punishing her a second time. (I do feel like she owes me an apology, which I did not get and won't ask for). So should I let her go on the trip? There are other kids who are difficult in class and they are not going to be allowed to go either.

What grade?
Personally, I would leave that decision up to the administration. I'd give all of the students the permission slip, and then let someone else decide who can or cannot go.

ditto. my administration makes a big deal about excluding kids from trips. you might want to consider only allowing her if she has a parent come along.

Re: WWYD? Long

i don't think i would have excluded her from the trip. she has already been punished for stealing the items from the book fair, so it's like she's being punished twice.

i would give her a form and perhaps you two can come up with an agreement of appropriate behavior for the trip. i would also talk to your AP or principal about what he/she thinks might be appropriate to do in this situation.

I agree with this. I usually try to leave these kinds of decisions up to an administrator...that way if the parent has an issue, I know I have some support.

Re: WWYD? Long

One year I had a problem child who I didn't feel comfortable taking on a field trip, so I told the parents that if they wanted their child to go, they would have to come along and be the chaperone.

I agree with this. I would speak to my AP and let her make the decision.

Sooo...my AP thinks she shouldn't go, my principal made the point (as I also did in my first post) that she has already been punished...but my principal is a big bleeding heart (which is not always bad.)

I just don't know- I feel like stealing twice (that we know of) in a short span of time points to a pattern of behavior.

ETA- I teach sixth grade.

Re: WWYD? Long

I have had students who I dont trust taking on field trips. I give all students a consent form, BUT I make it clear that they can only attend if a parent goes with him/her.

Re: WWYD? Long

I would definetely call the parents and tell them that if they want her going one of them has to come. Going into the city is a big responsibilty for you why add extra stress with this student.

I would ask her parents to go on the trip to supervise her.

I would do the same...some kids of mine are only able to go if someone accompanies them

Re: WWYD? Long

How is it possible to deny one student a field trip over another? I understand your concerns, and I think that it is a good idea to ask if someone from home (a guardian of sorts) would be able to accompany her on the trip but I think it may be illegal to deny this to the child. I am not trying to be controversial but it sounds like this child has some issues that need to be worked out that stem pretty deep. I just know in my school we aren't allowed to deny any students the right to go on a field trip that the rest of the class is going on unless their parent/guardian does not grant them permission.

To be honest, it's never been an issue to deny a student who I don't feel is deserving. I've kept kids off trips for less, and have never heard that doing so is "illegal." There have also been occasions where I have wanted to take a child on a trip and my principal said no. Usually I work it into my reward system and only the kids who met the criteria are allowed to go, though I didn't do that with this trip.

I work in NYC and we seldom have buses for trips. This means a 15-20 minute walk to the subway and taking the train. And I do agree that this student has some problems- all the more reason to hesitate to take her out in a situation like a trip involving the subway. A former colleague once took a child out who she had concerns about- and this kid took off. It took hours to find her. I won't take a chance that this will happen to me- even with chaperones, periodic head counts, etc., anything can happen.

As for this situation, I did make the offer that her mother could accompany her which my admins approved.

I agree with you. That could be a scary situation taking the subway and traveling around NYC for the fieldtrip.
