my son will not go to sleep on his own!

Help! My one year old son will not go to sleep without being rocked or fed. I have tried leaving him and coming back every few minutes to soothe him but he jumps up and screams whenever I put him in the crib. He cries so hard that he almost vomits. I'm a first time mom and don't know if this is normal and need advice on how to get him to put himself down. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

It's clearly my fault because I've always rocked him to sleep. He's always been a difficult sleeper but now I think he should be ready to start to put himself down.

I would also like to know how to get DS to sleep on his own. We have always rocked him, held him, cuddled him, nursed or fed him to sleep. The only place he falls asleep on his own is in the car.

That was about the age I did CIO with my DS.
It was hard. I sat outside his door and cried with him, but, about 3 nights later he "got it" and bed time was a breeze!

Try and get him on a schedule/routine and he will adjust to it.

I believe 3 nights of misery will change your life at this age. If is hard but you can do it and you will be so glad you did.
I was never firm with CIO with DD#1, I always caved at some point and she NEVER sttn until she was like 5(I swear) I did CIO hardcore with #2 and have the most awesome sleeper, put her down awake and walk out, thats it.

You might want to think about doing CIO and not going in to check on him (do you have the summer monitor?). For my son, going in only made it worse and made him cry longer.

By 1, he should be able to put himself to sleep and it sounds like CIO might be your only answer. I know it's hard, but i would give it a try and stick with it!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i just did CIO with my 6 month old and it was 3 nights of misery and now she is putting her self to sleep successfully within 10 min. theres still some crying but we are only on night 5! ... she will even put her self down for naps! it was the best decision i ever made! it was not an easy one at all.. i tried a few weeks back but neither of us were ready!... i would def. try CIO!
