BF after c section question
when is the first time you BF your LO after c section? when my DS was born I didn't see him for almost 6 hours while I was in recovery. by the time I got him he was starved so I gave him a bottle. Please share your experience if you BF after c sec.
also, do you have to burp the baby if you BF?
TIA!

Re: BF after c section question
while in recovery i put my DS to the boob just to latch. that didnt really work. about an hour later we were brought upstairs and we attempted BFing again. we were able to do it for a little. he didnt get a bottle until 3 days later because his blood sugar was low.
good question about the burping. for some reason i thought you didnt have to burp BFing babies but apparently you do!! i didnt learn that until days later.

Re: BF after c section question
I requested DS come with me to recovery so I could BF and do skin to skin with me and DH. All had to be well of course, which it was. He latched for the first time in recovery.
And yes to burping.

Re: BF after c section question
Well I didn't get to BF either DD right away BUT it wasn't b.c I had a csection - if things had gone smoothly they told me then I would have been allowed to right away when I was in recovery and they brought her to me to hold.
With DD#1 they thought she had either a TE fistula or an escphogeal atreasia (sp?) so they had to do an xray and other tests before she could be fed anything. The minute the tests were completed she was brought to me to feed.
With DD#2 she was very slightly hypogyclemic (borderline) so they gave her a bottle of formula in the delivery room, as soon as they were sure it was resolved I was able to BF.

Re: BF after c section question
They brought DS to me about two hours after the c-section, after I was out of recovery and in my regular room. I BF'ed him for the first time then. I did burp him.

Re: BF after c section question
They brought DS to me while I was in recovery about a half hour after he was born. He latched and BF immediately.
I always burp DS after feeding, except in the middle of the night when he is sleep eating (he doesn't take in much air at that time).

They brought DS to me when I was in recovery, I'm a little fuzzy on time, but it was maybe an hour from when he was delivered.

Re: BF after c section question
I BF'ed DD about an hour after my c/s-it was more just to try for the first time. I was told to burp between breasts-if I only do one, I burp her when we are done.

Re: BF after c section question
Abby was in the NICU so I pumped and did not get to feed her from the breast until she was about 5 or 6 days old. It took A LOT of will from someone who did not want to breast feed at all.

Re: BF after c section question
right in recovery...I lived and learned from my first DC....and I believe that is why DS was more successful than my DD (who I didnt see until I was in my room!)

this is exactly what I was wondering! since I didn't see DS, and gave him bottles starting 4 PM the day he was born (born at 940 AM) till 4PM teh next day. by the time I tried to get him to latch he was so upset, he wanted the bottle. DS took forever for his temp to regulate, he was in the nursery for so long, I hope this baby doesn't have the same issue.

Re: BF after c section question
I requested to see her ASAP, but I was ignored (I had a horrible experience at that hospital). I BF the first time about 12 hours after birth. Believe me, I was NOT happy. In the end, I still BFed for 26 months successfully so I guess it's all good.
I would recommend a Boppy Pillow because it did help with positioning without touching the incision. Yes, you do still generally have to burp the baby.

Re: BF after c section question
I feel asleep after i got to the recovery room...out cold! I didn't see DD for about 5 hours when i arrived to my room. She was ready to eat and latched on immediately. The football hold helped the first few days but it was hard because my DD was pretty big and i couldn't hold her properly. Then i started using the Boppy and it helped.

Re: BF after c section question
I feed him about an hour after my c-section once I was in my room.
And I do burp him, often before I start and during.

Re: BF after c section question
My hospital was AMAZING, I held my DD as they wheeled me from the OR back to my hospital room to recover, and then had her latched on about 1/2 hour later.
And about the burping--I always did it, but did you know that BF babies around the world tend NOT to be burped? I learned from my LC that burping is actually a very "western" thing. In other areas of the world, most women do not burp their babies, because the babies take in so little air if they are properly latched. I found that really interesting!
What I DID like about BF was--unlike bottle feeding, I would let her stay latched until she pulled off, and then I'd burp her--whereas I felt I was stopping every 2 min. to burp her with the bottle.

Re: BF after c section question
I ended up going under general anesthesia so I was really out of it when I woke up.
I tried BF when I woke up but it was cumbersome with all the tubes attached to me.
So I didn't really get to try until a good 24 hours or so after.
The hospital was great and did not give DD a bottle at my request.
When I finally tried BF she was did not latch every time. Sometimes she did, sometimes she didn't so we ended up supplementing with formula.
I just kept trying every time DD was hungry. When we got home, it was much easier for me to try to nurse since I could get more comfortable.
Don't give up!
My supply didn't come in for a while but I just kept trying. DD was EBF from week 2 to week 12. I am back at work and have been pumping successfully for 5 weeks. We supplement now with formula if I don't pump enough, but only like 4 oz a day. DD still mostly gets BM.
Oh, I always burp DD after I BF.

Re: BF after c section question
About an hour after my cs when i got out of recovery. My spinal started to wear off during surgery so when I got to recovery they had to work out my pain meds so I carried DS to recovery but then didnt see him again until I got to my room.
It was only about an hour to hour and a half after his birth

Re: BF after c section question
I tried to BF DS an hour after my c-section, but I was really nauseous when the nurse helped me to sit up. I didn't BF him until later that night (probably 4 hours after he was born).
DS developed reflux by 7 or 8 weeks. I'd burp him after he nursed on one side.

Re: BF after c section question
I didn't bf until I was in my room about 2 hours after recovery with all three. I had a bit of trouble with my third latching, but I just kept at it. Once I was home and the comforts of my own surroundings I just devoted everything to bf and all worked out well.
