Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I don't think there is a whole lot that I can read into someone telling me that they have a G.E.D. if that's all I know about them.
I was once with a friend of mine who asked a guy a question that he didn't like and he said something like, "Duh, you do have your G.E.D., don't you?" He meant it as an insult. She was a PhD. candidate at the time and she now has the PhD. I now run into that guy in social situations and I can never forget how obnoxious he was even though he now always tries to be so nice. I guess it would have been just as obnoxious if he used the term "high school diploma," because the issue was more about his tone.

I think they had issues in school with graduating on time, but went back to get their diploma (which is considered admirable).
.
I thought similar to this, but with my DH, he actually got his GED before he would have graduated....he did leave HS though

I do not have a GED but have a high school diploma. I didn't go to highschool in the US though. I never really thought about it & it hasn't stopped me from going to college. Ive never been asked about a GED.

That they probably overcame some obstacles and their education was important to them.
ITA. DH actually teaches 2x a week in NYC for the GED program. He says its mainly girls who had babies and had to dropout OR kids who ran with the "wrong crowd" and decided to get their sh!t together.

Nothing, honestly. It doesn't really spark a thought in my head about that person.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
my first thought is, maybe something happened in their life where they had to work FT instead of going to school? to me it's a non issue, not a big deal.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I dont think anything of it because many people in my family have one for the reason that they left school in Ireland before they could get their Leaving Certs (like graduation there) and when they came here, got their GEDs eventually. Also, my mom is a guidance counselor in a high school and many kids have a wide variety of reasons for getting the GED. so it doesn't color my opinion of a person at all.

I would think that high school wasn't for them but when they matured they realized they wanted a diploma.
Good for them.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I agree with the posters. I think a GED a lot of times shows that someone had obstacles in their lives but valued their education enough to pursue it.
It gets a bad rep because of Chris Rock's joke that it stands for "Good Enough Diploma."

What do you think when you hear someone has their GED v. a high school diploma?
I don't think there is a difference, is there?
I just think that they didn't get a change to finish high school for whatever reason but finished it later through a different program, hence the GED.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I don't think anything really... my dad has his GED and he's the smartest person I know.
I know another guy who failed the GED twice...
Over the years I've known many people to take it, all of them for different reasons, usually having nothing to do with their intellectual ability.

Great point I have had students who got their GED in order to start college earlier.
I think these people are SMART.
my last semester of high school was a JOKE. I feel like I wasted 6 months of my life on Gym, library, art, lunch, gym, home.
some of the smartest people I know went for the GED. sometimes life happens and you do what you gotta do.
if I judged everyone based on what they did in high school, I'd no doubt be a very lonely person.
my brothers recruiter actually suggested he get his GED when he didn't graduate on time (due to failing GYM...how hard is it to fail GYM ) but my mom wouldn't have it. since she got her GED, it was important to her that all of her kids get the diploma.
at the end of the day, it doesn't make a difference to me.

I had to take gym in summer school at least twice because I kept failing it. I had a serious problem attending class on a regular basis.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I think of my mom. She was 30 when she had me, and 35 when she got her GED. She told me it was because of me, she wanted to show me that she got her diploma. Thinking about it now, it was the bravest thing she could have done. She had a really rough childhood and dropped out to take care of her younger siblings. When I hear GED, I think DETERMINATION.

Where did you go to hisg school?
My last 6 months were killer, I can honestly say I averaged 3 hours of sleep a night back then
I had 4 AP classes, two of which had labs

I went to NYC public schools, but I was in an advanced program from the 7th grade on, so I had all of my regents tests/diploma after junior year.
took AP english and opted OUT of AP math b/c I HATED it. still hate math.
probably why I got such a shyte schedule but at the time I thought it was bliss....home by noon, have an hour to myself before going off to work.

A lot of people in my school failed gym because if you didn't change into your gym uniform, it counted as an absence. Get a couple of those...fail!

That something happened in HS that they had to either drop out or go to alternative school. They had challenges to overcome but did overcome them. Good for them

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I used to be in cometetive sports when I was younger. A lot of my cometitors did not go to school b/c we were in training 6 - 10 hours a day. Many of them got their GEDs before the age of 18, and then went to college pretty sucessfully. So I don't really think of it as a negative thing at all.

Re: Sort of spinoff of the education poll-
I dont think much of it. They decided to get their diploma without going to HS for whatever reason.
I dont think its some great accomplishment or admirable, because its the same as a HS diploma. Now if they gave me some backstory of what they had to overcome then I would prob think it was a great accomplishment.
