DH stayed with me the whole time when I had DS & it was so wonderful to have him there and share this experience together. This time around I'm not sure. He might stay home with DS unless my parents take him.

as a BTDT mom - I really thought I would want my DH to stay, especially the first night but I was sooo tired and drugged up and didnt even feel like worring about him and him sleeping in the chair, lol. I think it also depends alot on what time you give birth. I gave birth at 11:50 pm - by the time I got into my room it was 3am. I was so exhusted and he was too. It honeslty didnt phase me wheather he stayed or not. Which is why I ended up telling him to just go home and be back early the next morning. I was in the hospital for five days (and a private room) and he didnt stay once. I was so tired by the time he was leaving that i just wanted to be alone and sleep!! I think you just need to feel it out when the time comes Chat Icon

It's really up to him. I'll bring his stuff in my overnight bag just in case he wants to. But, I'm thinking that he'll probably sleep at home so he can be up and ready the next day when we take the baby home.

Not sure yet. It all depends on how the delivery goes and if we have someone to watch our dogs.

I'm not 1st time but LIJ didn't allow it. He stayed until he had to leave (I think 10pm?).

He was so exhausted from being up nearly the entire 24 hours I was in labor, I wanted him to go home to get a full night's rest.

LIJ WILL let you stay if you have a private room. I had one and DH stayed late but went home.

absolutely NOT.
I didn't think they let DH's stay...at least at Winthrop I don't believe they do. I've heard they have to be gone by 10pm.
Even if they did let him stay - I'd send him home. I need my sleep, as will he!

The nurses wake you up every 2-3 hours to bring you a baby, and then take your vitals and check what's going on down there.

do they bring you baby all night long if you are NOT BF? ugh I was hoping at least in the hospital I'd get some sleep! I thought I could tell them to keep the baby for the night? Chat Icon
thanks.

I heard you can have the baby in the nursery all night if you are not BFing.
No need to have them there if you aren't BFing them I don't think.

I delivered at NSUH Manhasset and I could have kept the baby all night, have them bring me the baby every 3 hours or not at all. I let them bring the baby every 3 hours...my roommate let them keep the baby at night-she breastfed during the day and let them give formula at night. I guess it also depends on the hospital.

My dh did not spend the night-better for him to be refreshed at least. I got to the hospital at around 2:30 am (started with contractions at like 11pm so I never got to sleep) and had the baby at 12:34pm and then was up that whole day...so we were pretty much up for 2 days straight. I was exhausted by the time I got home...the picture of me the day we came home is horribleChat Icon

Even if you are breastfeeding, you can request they supplement with formula overnight and leave the baby in the nursery. They may advise against it because of nipple confusion ect but you can do it.

I would like him to be there.
Even if I told him to go home, he probably wouldn't.

Re: 1st time mommies . . are you having DH stay at the hospital over night with you?

My husband did with our first baby. I probably won't ask him to the second time, unless I deliver late at night/evening.

With my son, I was in labor for 22 hours and hadn't slept in 48 hours. So once the baby was born, out of NICU and safely in our room, I was fast asleep. I didn't want him in the nursery. I wanted him with us. My husband said when he woke up to feed my son for that first night time feeding, he really felt like a father at that moment. I have yet to hear of a hospital that allows husbands to stay the night. I would have loved for my DH to stay and he would have loved to. They allowed him to stay late, but it is not typical that they will allow them to stay over (and I had a private room as well.)

I know other girls posted to this, but I'll just give my experience. I had DS at 11:44 at night after laboring all day. I told them I wanted to try to breastfeed. When they got me to my room at around 1:30 ish, they asked if I wanted them to feed him a bottle for his first feeding and keep him in the nursery. I was so exhausted I said yes. 10 minutes later they roll DS in to try to breastfeed. So ok, I try. Didn't happen for us. I decide I am going to formula feed DS. They then brought him to me every 2.5 hours (or something like that).

The next night, they asked if I wanted to keep him in the nursery to get some sleep, I said sure! Well, around 4 am, they wheel DS in, because that was the start of THEIR day. So needless to say, they didn't really keep him in the nursery at night-but it was fine because I couldn't wait for when they brought him to me each time, and I hated when they took him away.

I'm not sure if Good Sam allows this, but if they do and he wants to stay I'm okay with it. BUT I wouldn't enforce it. Knowing my husband, if he can stay...he will.

I told him he didn't have to, but he insists. I'm pretty uncomfortable about staying over night in a hospital so he wants to make sure I'm okay.

check with your hospitals...many don't let dads stay overnight in maternity. they can, of course, stay in L&D.
