Group b strep
My doc just told me my GBS test came back positive and that this is the case for 1 in 4 women. They tell me not to worry but researching online is driving me crazy! While rare, its really scary to think what could happen if the bacteria is passed to baby. Has anyone else tested positive? My fear is that I will have a quick labor and they won't be able to give me the full dose of antibiotics before baby is born...With my first pregnancy things progressed fairly quickly for me

Re: Group b strep
I tested positive and was given a small bag of antibiotics in my IV.
I'm sure you'll be fine. I didn't stress about it one bit!

Re: Group b strep
it's not uncommon. I tested positive with DD. They will just give you an antibotic IV when you go to deliver your DC.

Re: Group b strep
i tested positive also and i was upset but i guess its no big deal
a friend also told me, "if you think youre going to have your first child within 4 hours, then call the world record book from now..."
that helped put my mind at ease regarding the whole "get to the hospital immediately" schpiel the doctor gave me...

Re: Group b strep
What if you don't plan on having any other IV drugs?? I heard they give you 2 doses of antibiotics is that correct?? I don't plan on laboring or giving birth while lying down so a constant IV could be an issue. Thanks!

Re: Group b strep
In order to consider the GBS "treated" you need at least 1 dose of antibiotics 4 hours prior to the delivery. If you are there more than 4 hours, I think they keep giving it every 4 hours, but I don't think you need to be hooked up to the IV the whole time- just when the medicine goes in. If you deliver before getting antibiotics, or before the 4 hours, then they will check the baby for signs of infection- sometimes they take blood and check a culture to make sure it didn't get passed on. But it is very rare for it to get passed on, and very common for women to carry the bacteria, so don't worry!
