abnormal blood test results...kind of freaking
so my OB called today to let me know the results of the initial blood work i got done when i was 10 weeks (i'm 12.5 now)
aparently, i tested positive for a trait carrier of cystic fibrosis...which doesnt mean anything as long as DH isnt a carrier either...if he is, then our baby has a 25% chance of being born with CF
im trying not to freak out b.c i know its not 100%, but its still really scary...and aparently, only 5% of the population are carriers for the CF trait and i just happen to be in that 5%
anyways, DH got tested today at his doc so we'll find out in a few days...did anyone go through this? any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!
TIA

No advice, just remember it is a small percentage. Don't worry yourself

Re: abnormal blood test results...kind of freaking
I tested positive as well and it made me nervous, so I did some research. There are many different CF markers they test for and all combinations do not lead to CF.
Your DH would have to have the same genetic marker as you or another one that is known to combine with that one. Even if your DH has the same CF genetic marker as you which is pretty rare, there is only a 25% that the baby will have CF. There are also varying degrees of CF. Stay positive.

Re: abnormal blood test results...kind of freaking
Both me and my sister tested positive but our DH's tested negative so we didn't worry. I kind of freaked out when my results came back but I figured that would not stop us in our quest to have a baby.

We had the same thing, my dh came back negative as a carrier. Try to remember it is very rare to both be carriers and ever more rare to have the disease. Hope that time passes quick for you!

I also tested positive for this test, we are waiting for DH's results but just try and relax. I am trying to not think about it until I have to. I'm sure your DH is not a carrier just like mine!

Re: abnormal blood test results...kind of freaking
My sister and her Dh both found out that they were carriers for CF with the same gene type. It was scary for quite awhile. After an amnio, the found that my neice isnt even a carrier! I know how stressful this can be but try to take some deep breaths!

Re: abnormal blood test results...kind of freaking
My SIL is a carrier for CF and she freaked out. Thankfully, my brother was NOT a carrier and she has a healthy 1 year old. Just think, if you are in the 5%, there is a 95% chance that your husband is NOT in the 5%.

Re: abnormal blood test results...kind of freaking
I had tested postive as a carrier for SMA. The doctor wasn't too worried and told me it was rare, but of course I had to google it after I left the office. Bad idea, I was in tears the whole way home. Dh wasn't worried and got tested and luckily he was not a carrier, but I have to say that waiting for the results was the longest wait ever and I put myself under so much unneeded stress! I'm sure everything will be fine!
