Are there any mommies still bfing their babies who are 12 months and older?

my dd is almost 18 months and i don't see her weaning anytime soon. i am starting to hear a lot of slack about still bfing, especially since dd will not take regular milk, like its my fault. if your babies are older than 12 months how long will you nurse for?

I bf'ed until DS was 13 months old. I did start weaning 2 months before so it was a long process but if you are happy, dont let anyone pressure you. By the way, we got DS to drink milk by using ovaltine! Chat Icon

It's your choice you keep on Bf don't let people tell you otherwise. If you need support contact lalecheleague. I see one of the consultants tomorrow, her son is 2 and she still bf him. DO you want me to get her # for you?

I did it until 14.5 months. I didn't finding weaning to be too difficult.
Do you want to start weaning?

I nursed ds until he self weaned at 14 months. I plan to do the same with dd. If others don't like it tough Chat Icon
My sister just weaned her ds at 20 months and only because she had to start meds that are not compatible with bf'ing.
You are her mommy and keep nursing as long as you two choose. It's no one else s business how you feed your child as long as you feed her Chat Icon Chat Icon

DS is 16 months still nurses, and I don't see him stopping anytime soon. I am comfortable nursing until 2, if/when we get there I will reevaluate then.

He cannot drink cows milk, soy doesn't have enough fat for me to feel comfortable using it as a complete replacement for BM. We both enjoy nursing and I just don't have the heart to take it away from him for no reason.

I have gotten "still nursing" comments from very few people, most people have been very supportive. For me it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, there is nothing "wrong" with it.

At times I do worry about the weaning process, how or when I'll do it, how will I know when I am ready, how will DS react. I honestly don't see him self-weaning and I am just not sure when I right time to do it will be.

DS decided to wean at 15 months. At that point, he was down to just nursing first thing in the morning. I would've continued for at least a few more months.

I nursed my first daughter for 26 months, until I was pregnant again and forced her to stop. If you and her are happy then no one else matters. Just tell them that you are planning to let her go to college locally so that you can continue nursing as long as she needs...

and by the way Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon way to go momma!

Re: Are there any mommies still bfing their babies who are 12 months and older?

Cultures where babies are BF to 2+ years have healthier mommies. Research has shown (and a lot of new research soon to come out) that mommies who BF long term, have low incidence of diabetes, heart disease, obesity and cancer.

I'm jealous, I'm trying desperately to keep going. Do it as long as you can and as long as you feel appropriate for your lifestyle.

I'm jealous that of you are still BF I thought I was not producing enough milk etc etc. I stopped BF at 8months. I know better for the next time.

Re: Are there any mommies still bfing their babies who are 12 months and older?

I was happy to read that some of you are still bfing! I sometimes feel like the odd one out, since none of my friends bf or they gave it up very quickly. I like the bond and I will miss it. I also dread weaning because she is so attatched, I am like her pacifer which is my fault.
Those who are still bfing...are your babies having issues with taking regular milk? My dd doesnt like much daity at all and that concerns me. She likes cheese but a few bites. Ice cream, ricotta yogurt she doesnt care for.

DD is 14 months today and still nursing before bed. I can tell that she is starting to wean herself as she nurses for s few minutes on each side and then just wants to be put down. But until she refuses me I will keep offering it to her. I think there is nothnig wrong with BFing as long as you like!!
