going back to maiden name?
i have a question. when i got married i took his name. when we got divorced i left it as that. now i am thinking i want to go back to my maiden name.
anyone know the process of that? would it be the same process as just making up a whole new last name?
any info is appreciated. thanks!

Re: going back to maiden name?
My mom did (in the late 90's) and it was really easy even though she'd kept her married name for a few years after the divorce. Since it was already her legal name before her marriage she didn't have to go to court to change it. She went to DMV and Social Security with her divorce decree and they changed it back, then she called her bank, credit card, etc. and they did the change over the phone.
ETA: My parents got divorced in CA so maybe it was different? She was living in NY when she made the change, it was after my brother and I got out of high school.

Re: going back to maiden name?
You can go pick up the forms at the court house and there is a fee. It's a longgg process though. Are you positive that your divorce papers don't indicate anything about going back to your maiden name?

Is it possible that she asked to return to her maiden name in the divorce papers though? That would make the process very simple. That's what I did.

I don't think so, but it was done in CA so maybe their paperwork is different.

Re: going back to maiden name?
I just did this two months ago. I went to SS with my divorce papers and my old social security card with my maiden name. They kept both cards and sent me a new one in a week. I was in and out in 10 minutes.

Re: going back to maiden name?
I think its the same as when you change it when you get married, except instead of showing a marriage certificate, you show the divorce papers.
Try the SS website for more info.

Basically it is...as long as the divorce papers indicate that you can immediately resume using your maiden name. Otherwise, it's a separate process.

That's what I did.
Just show you divorce paper. To SS and then DMV. I did the CC over the phone.
It's easy! Just time consuming for a little bit.

Good point! My divorce papers stated that I would legally resume my maiden name once divorced.

Re: going back to maiden name?
My future SIL changed her name back to her maiden name 4 years after she got divorced. I think it was pretty easy for her.
