I have a question for you ladies...

I recently read a "thought-provoking" article in the NY Times re: use of donor sperm/eggs. Some things made me mad others I tried to absorb and see the author's POV. Since it is a sensitive subject, and if the majority rules, would you like me to post a link here? If not, but you'd like the article, FM me your email and I'll send you a link. If you want to google it yourself try this:

I read the article when it was first posted by the NY Times. I am not sure if you read the comments attached to the article, but they shed light into the "data" that was used by the author and the group responsible for publishing the study. I think there was a major agenda/bias with the study and its sample size. I hope that this additional information helps you. Many hugs and prayers for all of you facing IF. I hope that what ever path you choose leads you to happiness. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon going back to lurking.

There was def. bias in the article...and I assumed they searched far and wide to get the interviews they wanted Chat Icon As someone that has considered using a donor egg, I certainly took issue with a lot of what was written (esp the last quote). But I did feel it was valuable (for me) in understanding how *someone* conceived via donor may have a less than ecstatic reaction to their situation. Tx for the additional info...I'm going to poke around now!

Re: I have a question for you ladies...

I just read the article.

One of the comments made by a poster is that people should get over themselves and if they can't have a kid they should spend their energy in some other direction like fostering or adoption. I don't know how that is different.

Get over ourselves??? This poster also assumes that the child from a donor egg or sperm will have only one parent and clearly doesn't have the information. She assumes that because you need donor sperm there is no father.

Ignorant..totally ignorant.

Totally biased as well. My brother is adopted and even though he could find out who his parents are he chooses not to. Not everyone wants to know.

I think the comments pizzed me off more than the article.

Re: I have a question for you ladies...

Its actually the weirdest article.

And I love the Shady Grove advertisement on the bottom.

The last line is my favorite:

"existing entirely for “other people’s purposes, and not my own.”

No one asks to be born and basically everyone exists entirely for other peoples purposes. Right?

Its so dumb it doesn't even get much reaction from me. LOL....

I don't even bother with reading comments anymore...on there or Newsday or CNN. Way too much ignorance in this world, IMO.

Re: I have a question for you ladies...

Sorry, but I get so annoyed by ignorant people... but as often is the case when people are not faced with certain situations in life they don't know what they are talking about ...

Chat Icon
many people lack empathy and they are just disgusting Chat Icon But I really enjoyed reading the comment from Gemli
Boston (the 10th comment); this is how it ends:
"Couples who cannot have children do not need additional roadblocks, discouragement, or scolding. They should not be threatened with specters of unhappy, angst ridden children as a result of turning to modern medicine to circumvent their infertility. And they most certainly do not need medieval religious dogma informing their decision as to how to bring a wanted, loved child into the world."
Good luck to all of us who struggle to bring a baby into this world!

Re: I have a question for you ladies...

As the mother of a perfectly wonderful adopted baby boy I can 110% say that DNA does not = mother or father. Someone who willing gives an egg or sperm does not = a parent. While I do feel that adoption is a bit different, I can 100% say that if you are the person who feeds a baby at 2am, 3am, 5am and is there to kiss boo-boos and goes to the meeting at school when your child is not doing so well (or doing great) and has the fights about homework, holds them when they cry because the girl/boy that they like likes their friend instead...well that is a PARENT.
