Abnormal Quad Test
I'm very new to the boards and I haven't posted here yet but I'm 28 years old and 18 weeks pregnant with my first child. I just got a call from the doctor saying that I got an abnormal result from the quad blood test. They drew blood at 12 weeks and then again at 17 weeks but because the baby was uncooperative, they never got the measurement of the back of the neck just the nasal bone. Every sonogram that I have has shown no markers for anything so I didn't even think anything. I then got a call from the physician's assistant saying that I had a 1 in 8 chance of having a baby with down syndrome and for my age and no family history that is pretty high. She said that my doctor recommended the amnio. I spoke with my doctor and she said that the only way to know for sure is to do the amnio. My husband and I have already decided that we are keeping the baby no matter what but after much crying, we are deciding to do the amnio. She did say that she has seen many cases where people have had high risk like this and fond everything to be normal after doing the amnio. I'm just very scared of the pain of the needle but mostly the risk of miscarriage. The PA did make me feel better saying that in her 4 years at this facility and they perform 5-10 amnios per da,y no one in her 4 years have had a miscarriage from it and the geneticist doing the amnio is board certified and highly recommended by my doctor. But it stiill scares the crap outta me bc I don't want to lose this baby. I've been reading that so many people get false positives on these tests and asking family members, each person knows at least one or two people that have had a false positive on these tests. I'm trying to schedule the amnio for tomorrow because I'm a worrier and after talking to my husband, my mom, and my doctor I think the stress of not knowing might be worse. I was so excited because I just started feeling my baby move and kick last week and the baby has been responding to outside noise like music and voices, all of which my doctor said were good signs but not determinate of anything. Thanks for reading. Any experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Re: Abnormal Quad Test
I had abnormal 12 week blood results. My NT scan was fine. I was said to have a 1/166 risk. DH and I decided to do the amino bc there was no way we could relax and enjoy the pregnancy not knowing. We needed to know either way.
Everything turned out fine. Doing the amnio was the best thing for us bc it was piece of mind.

Re: Abnormal Quad Test
Thanks everyone for the support! I'm very scared about doing the amnio bc of the pain factor but mostly the miscarriage factor but I feel like I need to know...whether that means we start preparing our lives for a child with special needs or it was a false positive and we can relax for the rest of the pregnancy. Either way, I know this baby is gonna have a lot of love from my husband and I and our families but I can't help but be scared...I'm scheduled to go tomorrow at noon so I leave it in God's hands.

Re: Abnormal Quad Test
Im sorry that you have to go through this I remember how scared I was. Let me tell you I had a CVS which is like an Amnio but at an earlier stage and a BIGGER needle. It was incrediably easy and I only felt a pinch. I really encourage you to get the amnio so that you know what you are dealing with here. Lots of luck and hugs

Re: Abnormal Quad Test
Tons of hugs and prayers for you!
My coworker had the same thing happen to her. They said her chances for Down Syndrome were very high for her age and family history. She got the amnio (which she said didnt hurt) and everything ended up being perfectly fine. She has a very healthy daughter now.
Hope everything turns out perfect for you as well

Re: Abnormal Quad Test
I had this happen when I was pregnant with my DD. It turns out they left something out of the formula they use when the calculate the odds (I think they forgot to include my 12 week bloodwork with my 17 weeks results).
We moved my Level II up by 2 weeks to check for DS markers, and since DD did show 3 soft markers, for peace of mind, we decided to get an amnio done. (There was NEVER any intention of terminating the pregnancy. That's a big pet peeve of mine when people think people get amnios are doing it because they will terminate if something is wrong).
DD is a perfectly healthy 17 month old now.
These are screening tests and they do happen to have a high false positive rate.

Re: Abnormal Quad Test
Just wanted to say. My cousin received the same results, did the amnio which showed that the results were still in the abnormal range , she has an absolutely healthy 5 yr old son. Tests aren't everything. Many
