Anyone know about unemployment????
How longcan you stay on for and whats the top pay these days?

ETA: if your employer is offering you cobra does that mean you are fired? You have to be fired to get cobra correct?

You don't need to be fired to get Cobra. Cobra is a right for anyone that has been taken off an existing insurance plan. .

NYS max weekly benefit is $405. I believe you get unemployment for 26 weeks. I know there has been extensions in the past, but I don't know if they are still applicable.
Also I don't think you are eligable for unemployment if you are fired. I believe you have to be laid-off (lose your job for no fault of your own).

in NYS you can stay on Cobra for 36 months. just went through this with my old employer.

It depends on when your initial lay off date is. They have extended the maximum amount of weeks twice. I've unfortunately collected 15 months since December 2008.

Yes, initially it is 26 weeks. I don't believe they have announced any extensions yet.
Cobra is for health insurance, you can choose to keep your health insurance and pay the premiums yourself. I'm not familiar with what the time restrictions are for Cobra. I would assume it varies by insurance company but that's just a guess.

It is definitely $405 per week for 26 weeks with no extension in place yet. I know for sure because I just applied last week! HTH

You can be fired and get unemployment. It depends on the circumstances. I had been fired without an explanation and received UE.
Right now, the max is $405 a week, based on your earnings and there is an additional $25.00 a week from the federal govt.
