my 3 week old and poop problems! help!
my little guy is 3 weeks old today and has been having gas and poop issues for the last week. it's saturday morning and he hasn't pooped since wednesday night. i'm already giving him an ounce of prune juice a day per doctor's orders (cuz he's skipped days before) and today i tried the q tip with vaseline trick. i called doc today and this is all they told me to do. the baby had a good night but he's fussy this morning. every once in awhile he scrunches up his legs and gets all red in the face and grunts like he's trying to go. i don't think he's having a gas problem right now cuz he had mylicon last night and slept pretty well unlike other gassy nights when he screamed for hours. so should i be concerned about no poop in 2 days??? what if it goes to 3 days????

Is he formula fed or are you BFing? My answer will depend on that. If you are BFing, it's not unusual for them to skip days, honestly, I think even if they are FF, it's not that uncommon, but I know my son (who's 8 weeks) is miserable when he skips a day of pooping. In my experience, prune juice just makes babies more gassy, I use water in between feedings to keep him regular. Also, if you are FF, what type of formula are you using? We switched to gentlease and his gas is no longer an issue. Even the pooping has gotten easier for him.

I think they can go a week without pooping before a doctor will consider it serious.
It seems like the typical fussy gassy constipated baby phase.

i'm FF. we give him Similac Advanced. I have asked the docs a few times already about switching formula and they keep discouraging me saying that it doesn't sound like he's rejecting the formula and the formulas are all the same anyway. but i feel so bad. he's so uncomfy i feel like i should do something!

Re: my 3 week old and poop problems! help!
Both of my boys had this issue, Honestly I wouldnt go crazy changing formula's b/c in my opinion this is something that they need to grow into. Their stomachs will mature a little and their bodys will get used to the formula. I agree with the water instead of prune juice. Although I have given both the prune juice I think it cramps them up and they have more gas issues and screaming from the pain.
You can also give him a warm bath and put a warm wash cloth on his belly while in the tub. When he gets out massage his belly a little this alway helped my kids. It kinda stunk b/c they were all clean and then took a massive poop but they felt so much better.
eta hopefully his cord is off or just use the wash cloth and forget the tub. =) Good luck.

Similac Advanced made my son incredibly constipated!!! Too much iron in it. It became too painful for him to poop.
Sounds to me like you might want to think about switching and finding one better suited for him. (we used similac alimentum)
ETA: we did the prune juice and it only made him worse. Made him have more gas. Can they have pear juice at that age? i know my son had it when he was much older. Not sure about a newborn. The pear juice always worked much better for my ds.

Prune juice will only make him gassy IMO. Give a little water inbetween feedings. And being it's been 4 days you may want to try a little suppository, only 1/4 of it though. Or did you try a thermometer with vaseline?
Similac Advance and all the formulas have probiotics in them now which seems to make infants constipated and more gassy according to my ped.

my daughter used to get constipated, I did the vaseline with a Q-tip, and after would do the bicycle with her legs, eventually, she got it out after 20 mins. Not sure if it would work for you, but just a suggestion.
oh, and I agree with the water over the prune juice.

Sounds like what I went through with DS. We changed his formula to Similac Sensitive. I also gave him some chammomile tea with his formula and boy does that help him. I still do that when he gets really gassy. At that time I did 2 ozs of chammomile tea mixed with his forumla.
We didn't giev him pruce juice but we did try gripe water and mylicon drops and they really did nothing for him.
