Help stopping night time feedings for 9mo. old.

Chat Icon and I have fallen hard into the habit of nursing to sleep. At 9 months old, he has no idea how to fall asleep without me. It is possible to give him a bottle to sleep, and this doesn't bother me too much, but the thing that is KILLING me, is that he still wakes up every hour or two because he wants to lay next to me and nurse ALL NIGHT LONG. I can't take it anymore. We tried offering him a bottle when he wakes up at night but he refuses it. He isn't hungry, he just wants the comfort. He thinks I'm a walking pacifier (which, by the way, he won't take).

Unfortunately, we are in a 1 bedroom apt. The baby is at the foot on my bed in a pack-n-play which I padded at the bottom. When he wakes up he stands up, hangs on to the rail, and screams until I can't take it anymore. By then his throat is usually sore and he is basically inconsolable. I have no idea what to do, but this all needs to stop. Any advice??

I don't have any real advice since my 9 month old gets up twice a night for the bottle - we are in a one bedroom as well and I have an older lo who I don't want to wake up.

I might suggest putting the pack in play in the living room for a few nights and maybe if he doesn't see you he will not stand up and scream.

I am almost ready to try CIO with my guy since he used to be able to sleep all night - he was STTN from 4 weeks to 6 months and it has been down hill since.

I would suggest this as well. Are you opposed to CIO? Since he's not hungry and just wants to pacify himself, this might be your only other option?

I am with you.

in fact, just last night I was almost ready to let my son CIO, and then he fell and hit his face on the crib flat.

that was my sign Chat Icon my husband walked into the room and said "he won" and yep. he did.

luce wins. I have no help for you. but I will NOT CIO. I cannot do it.

I know though that my son is teething and that has a lot to do with his recent wakings. so I will suffer through it with him. Chat Icon

I'm not opposed to CIO, but I feel like he'll never stop because he can't fall asleep on his feet. Can he?

Anyway, DH can't take it. Then I end up with no sleep, a crying baby, and an angry husband. They both look at me like it's my fault that no one is happy and I can't take the guilt.

Not sure that it helps but you are not alone Chat Icon

I started reading the no cry sleep solution....so far (I haven't finished reading) she suggestions trying to shorten the BF time at night. Keep trying to take the baby off (put a finger to detach him) and place him back down...eventually I guess the hope is that he will not need you anymore....but you are not stopping him cold turkey from nursing at night...

Re: Help stopping night time feedings for 9mo. old.

you could start with nap training, that way he can learn to fall asleep. I would do your nap routine and then place him in the pnp awake and leave him in the room for one hour. and repeat, it may take a few days for him to catch on, but consistentcy is key.

my son sleeps 11-12 hr a night when he is by himself. however recently we slept in his room (our guest bed is in there) since my parents were visiting and within minutes of us being in the room he was waking up. and then he would wake up every few hrs... so it could be possible that you and your husband are waking him up.
