Leaving Home at 8 Years Old
I'm watching the BBC America show "Leaving home at 8 years old" and am having a hard time understanding how these parents can send their children off to boarding school so early.
Some of these parents seem to struggle with sending these kids to boarding school yet do so anyway because they think it will make the kids more independent... I'm at a lost here, these are kids. They can learn to be more independent in other ways and at their own time. I'll probably be very upset at my parents if they did this to me.

I think it's just as bad when a 5/6 yo goes to sleep away camp. JMO.

Re: Leaving Home at 8 Years Old
whiles its not something I would ever do, or could wrap my head around doing.....my roommate freshman year of college spent most of her life off at an all girls boarding school and she LOVED it. She was so well adjusted, independent and the transition to college was seamless for her. So I can, in my experience, with my one roommate, understand since she only spoke very highly of her experience.

I could never do that to my child. However, if they wanted to go to sleep away camp I would be fine with that. I went to sleep away camp when I was 10 but there were kids there who were 8 and 9 years old too.

One of my closest friends from college went to boarding school for high school - she was also incredibly well-adjusted and independent. I probably wouldn't do it at 8, but I would think about for HS if it was something DD wanted to do and we could afford it. Chances are though that DH would say no.

All of my friends started sleep away at 6. They all were so well adjusted in school and confident people in life. I was not allowed to go to sleep away but i dont think its a bad idea

Re: Leaving Home at 8 Years Old
I have a 9 1/2 year old, and I would be hard pressed to get her to even go to sleep away camp for a week. She still occassionally comes home from sleeping over a friends because she is sad. She misses home and/or me. The kid would go back inside if she could While I see the potential good points to boarding school, I think 8 or so is WAY too young. I know all kids are different but emotionally I do not believe they are ready.
