Please provide insight
can anyone provide insight as to what we can expect from the school district (Sachem) our DS was recently diagnosed with ADHD. His Dr. has recommended that the school do a full evaluation on him to determine if he is elible for additional help//services from the school/district.
I have sent an e-mail to his teacher, and will hopefully hear back from her today or tomorrow.
I was just wondering if anyone has gone through this? what is the process? What type of questions should I ask? and how easy is it to actually get help for DS?

I went through this in Kindergarten with my dd. She took a Connor's test with the school Psychologist. Her score basically told she had ADHD but I then took her to a pediatric neurologist in 1st grade. He did the same test, and a brain wave test.
This is her 7th yr. on meds.

To be eligible for services, he will have to qualify under special education. If you request an evaluation in writing to the Office of Student Services, they will have to evaluate him within a certain time limit (I believe 30 school days). The school social worker would contact you for a Social History and your son would have a cognitive evaluation with the school psychologist. A Connors may be given to his teachers. The Connors is a rating scale that rates the characteristics of ADHD that his teachers observe (activity, attention, distractibilty, etc). There is a parent version of the Connors also.
A medical diagnosis will definitely help.
THere will be a CSE meeting to discuss the results of the assessment and discuss if he is eligible to be classified as a Special Education student. If he does classify, he would likely be classified as OHI- other health impaired (this is the usual classification for students with a medical diagnosis). He might be eligible for test accommodations such as extended time.

If it is determined that he does not require remedial services/IEP, he could still be given a 504 plan if ADHD effects his ability to learn in the classroom. The 504 plan assures that accommodations are in place for him to have a level playing field when in class/taking tests/etc..

Thank you so much for your replies. I have a lot to familiarize myself with in regards to ADHD and I am a little overwhelmed. This is such a huge help.
