Please help... dog vomiting

Lexi pooped in her crate overnight and has diarrhea today. She also vomited twice this morning (all liquid).

My vet is booked and could not squeeze me in

What should I do? The last time this happened I knew it was because she ate something. The only thing that worked was antibiotics.

This time, I am clueless as to what happened. I am scared to feed her because that made things worse last time.

Is there a certain amount of time I should wait before giving her food? What about water? I have probiotics, too (prescribed by the vet last time) - should I give that to her when she's back on food?

I have never dealt with a dog vomiting before so I am worried, moreso than usual. TIA.

def. make sure she gets water..u don't want her to dehydrate...she very well could have eaten something--i would of course keep a close eye on her

aunt libby's can of pumpkin works for diarrhea--boil rice/chicken too if you plan on feeding her--i would try to feed her..if she doesn't want to eat, she won't--i would give her a little at a time too

First I think you should find a new vet! It's one thing to not have an available appt but they should be giving you instructions over the phone, IMO. I think the last time my dog had diarrhea and was vomiting the vet didn't have me give her any food or water until she stopped throwing up. Then we gave her 1 tbsp of boiled rice and chicken. If she was able to hold down that 1tbsp we'd give her more and she didn't go back to regular dog food until her stools were normal and even then we slowly mixed it in with the rice and chicken.

Daisy was constantly throwing up bile for a few months and we were in and out of the vet to find an ailment. It was just determined she has a sensitive stomach.

Here is what we did - we cooked white rice and boiled some chicken and mixed two parts rice with 1 part chicken until her stomach would settle down. Yes, she became constipated, but she went after a few days, but it helped settle her stomach.

We learned we had to change her dog food as well, so she's on an organic dog food now and her stomach seems to be much better.

Just allow the dog to relax and nap all day if it wants - no excessive exercise if you can help it while its body adjusts.

The first time someone told me that sometimes "dogs just throw up and it's normal", it sure didn't feel that way. You want to help them and get them well, because it's hard to see them like that.

But if it's coming out both ends that usually means there is no blockage and I check around for dangerous/poisonous things they might have gotten into. If I don't find anything, the gums are pink and look good, they don't have a temperature and they're not too listless, I follow the usual ... lots of water, limiting food, plain boiled chicken and rice, some pumpkin, and wait it out.

I hope she feels better soon. I would be concerned about a vet that doesn't at least give you help over the phone too.

aww poor baby. Make sure she has access to plenty of water so she doesn't dehydrate and boil some rice and chicken. Like others have said, if she doesn't want to eat she wont but a little at a time. As far as the vet is concerned, I'd find a new one. Hope she is feeling better soon!

Thank you so much everyone! She is in good spirits - we were playing outside before. She had some rice with pumpkin about an hour ago and gobbled it up, along with her water (she wasn't drinking before). She is resting now, and hasn't thrown up yet, so I think that's a good sign.

This is her second time with an upset stomach and we've had her less than 2 months so it's a bit nerve-wracking.

Glad to hear she's holding it down. Don't be surprised if it takes a while for her to have her first bowel movement too... rice is binding.

When Brinkley started vomiting frequently, we stopped giving him anything but his food. We slowly added other things back in but nothing seemed to be the culprit. Then we found out about 'empty stomach syndrome' and once we changed the feeding schedule and added a healthy treat at 9pm (half a banana), he's gone months with no incidents.

I hope, if this is a 'thing' with her, that you can find out if it's something you can control or if it's general malaise. Or, like a few people have said, sometimes they just throw up.

Glad to hear that she is feeling better. Jensen had a lot of stomach issues when we first adopted him. Have you had her checked for parasites?
