Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
make friends with the back of the hersey's cocoa container. no one will call that run of the mill.
the three of us always make josh's cakes. we enjoy it. he enjoys it..it is part of his bday fun.
i can't wait for this fondant craze to pass. looks cool as hell...but the taste doesn't compare to someone who was just trying to bake a good cake. a lot of the fondant ones sit out for awhile and i don't find them moist at all.
this year's cake...ghetto! but it was the cocoa recipe and he loved making it with us

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
Janice, that is actually my "go to" cake. I make it all the time and it comes out great...but I personally hate icing so I never ice it
I am going to try my hand at baking a layer cake this weekend. if all goes well, I am going to make it.
thanks so much!!!!

I would and have but it's not necessary and if you're going to feel guilty then I say not to do it.

I would love to but I have no idea what it looks like
the baker was going to do a fondant cake with a drawing of the character that I cannot do.
I will probably focus on making the cake look like a planet...maybe a choco colored buttercream icing to make it look like dirt (yummm appetizing ) and I have some star candles I can use.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
Since I'm guessing you are having the party at your house in OC...is there a Shoprite nearby? My FIL got a cake there recently and it was very good. Even the bakery in Wal-mart (in Monroe/Harriman) makes really nice cakes. People don't need to know where your cake came from. As long as it tastes good - that is what matters.

My culinary guys can make you a TASTY TASTY cake. For an eight of the price. Your money would be going to charity. Let me know if you are interested.

Yes for sure. DDs cake was over $200. It was gorgeous and delicious and a first birthday only happens once in a lifetime.

Honestly, I think $150 is pretty pricey!
If I were you, I would make it yourself! Partly, for selfish reasons

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money on a cake. Part of the reasonis that I HATE those cakes b/c in my warped mind, they are too obviusly 'touched' .........I skeeve the whole Cake Boss thing - I don't want you poking and squishing and obviously man handling my cake !! (I'm sure all bakeries do this, but for something molded and modeled, it's obvius - KWIM?)
But everyone has different priorities and things that are important to them If it's important to you, and it's not going to break the bank, then do what makes you happy.
But honestly, people care more about what the cake tasts like than what it looked like.

Do what you can afford. Don't worry about disappointing anyone. They are coming to celebrate your amazing little man. $16 costco cake or $150 bday cake....it really doesn't matter. They love your son--that's what matters
I couldn't agree more!!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I would not do it. I would go to bjs, wegmans or shop right with a flash drive that has a photo you want and have that put on the cake. Having just had DDs cake made at Wegmans for 8-12 people it was $25. I thought that was a lot for a cake, but when I called a few local bakeries most were quoting me $50 for the same size cake.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I spent over $200 on DS's christening cake and while it was beautiful I probably wouldn't do it again.
For his 1st b-day we are going to BJs and I am spending $20 on his cake. My brother had one for his DD's b-day and it was so delicious.
I wouldn't have any second thoughts on baking your own cake. I say go for it.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
No, not if I was stressing about it. I did spend about $100 on cupcakes for DD's party but since we made all the food, I made the centerpieces and rented a super cheap place, we felt it was justified. Plus, I could never make cupcakes (look and taste) like this bakery - and it was a cupcake theme so we kinda splurged on that.
I'm glad you're going to try to make it yourself, I think it will come out delish! And you have so many cute little touches with the theme so far, it's going to be great!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
A custom invitation or a jazzy birthday cake wouldn't make me travel 80+ miles to be with anyone for any kind of event-your family and friends are traveling and making the effort to be with your son to celebrate this wonderful milestone with him.
Honestly, a party where everything was homemade sounds like heaven to me! :) I am sure it is going to be a wonderful day and no one will be sitting there thinking I can't believe this is the cake they are serving. I think people would be more upset to know you overextended yourselves on a birthday cake. Have a great time, your party is going to be awesome!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I drove 2 /2 hours to go to a friends child's 3rd birthday party that lasted about an hour 1/2. I can assure you that she didn't spend over $30 for her cake (she actually did cupcakes from Walmart)? Neither I, nor any of the other gusts there, really cared what she served. We were there for the birthday child and our friend

No, I would not. It's a cake...it gets eaten.
People are going to come to your party because they love you and your son. And if they're coming strictly because of some illusion, then I couldn't be bothered to care what they think anyhow. At the end of the day (and I hate that phrase!), it's a first birthday party.
I couldn't agree more!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I could never rationalize $150 for a cake no matter what. Get a topper from etsy or a bakery even if you DID have to get a BJ's membership it would only cost you $55.... BTW, the best cake I've had in the last year (taste only) was from friggin Waldbaums - I almost fell over when the host told me cuz it was delish!!! And I think she paid $18 for a 1/2 sheet....

you know it's so funny bc I was kicking the idea around a while back but decided between buying new pans and stuff it would cost only slightly less than the bakery...but this quote is TRIPLE what it would cost me.
I may go to the store yet....but I have tins in my house and some cupcake molds so maybe it was "meant to be" that i make this damned cake.
my shower cake was from our local super and it was yummy!

I wouldn't. I get sheet cakes at BJs for every birthday party or even for the kids. They come out very nicely & taste great.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I would make the Hershey's chocolate cake (you have to try the icing recipe on the can, too - it's delicious!) and these:
http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/food/recipes/mini-cookie-cups-ice-cream/
I made these for DS' first birthday last month and they were a huge hit!
