Phone interviews (just a tip)

DO NOT USE SPEAKERPHONE FOR PHONE INTERVIEWS.

This should go without saying but apparently it doesn't.

I just interviewed a senior level candidate - 20 years experience. I had trouble hearing him, he was obviously doing other things in the background - which translates to me as you aren't fully concentrating on the phone interview & maybe you aren't interested.

I'm not saying I'm not going to hire him because of it...He stopped shuffling around after we discussed salary but the impression was made.

Make a good first impression. It may be your only shot at a position.

Re: Phone interviews (just a tip)

I have never had a phone interview, but the only way I could rationalize using a speaker phone during one would be if I felt that it made me less nervous. I don't know why, but maybe some people feel that way. Maybe that person felt if they fidgeted around they would be less nervous. I totally agree with you regardless, but I can see how perhaps it helps others. KWIM?

I've had a number of phone interviews and never use speaker phone b/c i don't have one. but i can see how it would be easier to talk w/o having to hold the phone to your ear for 45 minutes. it's hard to take notes and hold phone at same time for that long.

but, if there was a lot of static or white noise i would definitely not use one. as the interviewer you could have asked to be taken off speaker b/c you hwere having trouble hearing the person.

Re: Phone interviews (just a tip)

In most circumstances I cut conversations short when the other person is using speaker phone or is otherwise engaged. It's my time they are taking and I have found over and over again that I have to repeat things that I have told people during conversations in which I knew they were not paying attention. For an interview I cannot even imagine either party using speaker phone but it is worse if the candidate does it!

I think it's common sense not to use a speaker phone during a phone interview.
