Re: Spinoff to e-reader: Kindle or Nook

I have a Nook. I like that I can borrow books from the library. That's not Nook specific, any ereader that uses epub files or pdfs can do this, so also Kobo, Sony eReader, etc. But Kindle uses their own proprietary file type so they can't and I haven't heard any rumors that is going to change anytime soon.

I like that I can lend books to other Nook users. On the downside, I can only lend them once and some authors and/or publishers don't allow their to be shared at all. Currently Nook is the only one that does this, but Kindle is getting this technology soon.

Right now the Nook's file management is terrible, Kindle definitely is better there. Books are just listed in the order you bought them (current to oldest) so if you have a big library it can be a challenge to find what you want. You can go through Calibre to change the metadata to organize it better, but in the next firmware update later this year they said that will be improved for books bought on BN.com, not from other sources.

I can buy books from a lot of sources so I can shop around for a better price. I think with the Kindle you are limited to Amazon and Smashwords, but I might be wrong about that.

I personally like the little touchscreen at the bottom to the keypad on the Kindle. I use it to turn pages with a fingerswipe rather than having to use a key to turn the page. Not a big deal but just my preference.

I thought Sharper Image went out of business?

Either way - backlit reading and no library access - 2 thumbs down IMO. Especially since it's the same price as Nook 1.5

nook

my sister liked the fact that she could go to barnes & noble with questions and to get information on how to use it and get the most out of it. it's nice b/c there's always a real, live person there to talk to face-to-face.

Re: Spinoff to e-reader: Kindle or Nook

In short...

Kindle: you keep buying books. Also some writers/publishers go into a "war" with amazon and you will not get their books with a kindle.

Nook: compatible with the local library. You can download books for free from your library and don't have to keep buying books.
